Question relocating gearbox forward for weight balance...??

I have seen 911;s where the gearbox was moved forward of the strock position a couple inches. I has a couple concerns that need to be cleared before i go any further...

how far/farthest do they really move it from the factory location?

are different axle shafts needed; ones that are longer to run the more extreme cv joint angle?

how much of an angle can be run, without running into major problems?
my car is all cut away for camber boxes anyways, and im going to do this while im at it. a full 3-4" of movement would be nice, but i dont see moving it more than 2" forward being possible.

any racers with experience in this stuff's?
thanks!

You have to cut into the anchor for the torsion bars, which means you have to reinforce the chassis and also go to coil-overs. TRE Motorsports moved mine about an inch and a half forward. They had to shorten the shift rod, and machine and modify all the motor mounts.

The axles will have a shorter lifespan.

how are the angles of the cv joints?
did you have to make the shafts any longer, or they just "extend" a bit to conform to the angle.

as far as upgrades go, what should i do for cv joints/shafts? i plan on 700hp/600lbs.tq

what have you been getting out of yours as far as lifespan? what setup are you running?

appreciate the help, as i know your the one to talk to about this sh#$

Actually I think Jack is in the under 300hp range - at a 1 1/2 inch move - may not limit the lifespan too much. Juan Ruiz has a G-50 and around 600+ and he has been chewing through axels. Of course he drags his 1988 Carrera Turbo but has the conventional layout (and the g-50 actually pushes the engine back a tad)

So, what tranny do you plan on using to handle the power - Turbo tranny may be your only choice - or a shortened g-50. I think you'll be close to unchartered territory...

What's your mission? Street car? Street Car/DE? DE/Race Car? Race Car?

i will use a 930 or g50... just depends on what comes along. if going with the g50, itll have to be one of those short bellhousing, and short snout gearboxes..

Be sure to move the oil tank too - it has a much bigger effect than one would think (according to PAGs advertising dept.).

Maybe you want to do this:
Retro Rocket red RSR Clone – 1,750 lbs (794 kg) with 962 engine and “upside down” 935 turbo trans., making it the lightest known clone – even lighter than a 911 R – even though it has larger fenders and a roll cage; article in Panorama, Dec. 2004, but few details

Or put a 993 rear susp. into your early car - at least 2 people have done that.

For more ideas on what people have done (with emphasis on light wt.) check out my Model Comparisons doc at Thom's web site.
rennlight.com

Maybe you really want a 904 or 906 clone?

The sky's the limit - and we are all happy to watch you spend money on a super project...
