oxygen and battery light
Both my oxygen and battery light came on this morning when I started the car and did not go off on my commute. I am assuming they are related. Any suggestions over prognisis?

I don't know squat about why your O2 light came on, but if your battery light came on you either have a charging problem or your fan belt broke. DO NOT drive your car until you determine if the fan belt broke. If it broke DO NOT drive your car until it is replaced or face severe overheating and engine issues!

The o2 light came on because you've gone 30,000 miles since it was last reset. You just need to remove the speedometer and depress a small button behind it. Do a search and you'll find a post with a picture of it.

Thanks. I checked the fan belt and it is working and not slipping. The alternator light is very bright and does not change with rpm. I know the previous owner replaced the coil, battery and alternator trying to track down an intermittent starting problem. he solved the problem with a new ignition. so i am wondering if this is some kind of strange electrical problem i have inherrited or maybe a sub standard alternator.
i had a run up to marin next week planned. this sucks. |

As far as the o2 light it might just need a reset.
The good thing about your alternator problem is the you know now that the warning bulb works. Without that bulb your alternator would not charge at all. You've eliminated the belt as a problem too. Next thing is to clean off the terminals and find out the voltage at the battery terminals, with key off and then with the engine running. At rest battery should be alittle above 12volts, engine running about 14 volts. Let us know what you find and we can go from there. You might want to do a search on alternators and regulators too, lots of great info to read up on. |

thanks for the advice. i tested the battery. 12.3 with the engine off, 12.0 with the engine on. i think i may need to replace the alternator this weekend. i am going to ping the previous owner. his records show that he replaced the alternator himself last summer for $150. that seems pretty low from my research so i am wondering if it is a sub standard recon he installed. or maybe something came loose.

Looks like your alternator is not putting out voltage to charge your battery. Your car has been running on just your battery. I would guess a faulty alternator. Since your car is down anyway, you might as well go through and clean all the grounds and normal alternator problem spots. You might find a loose bolt or connector and you never know what kind of "imaginative fixes" that a PO used on your car. If the PO was smart the $150 would just about cover a rebuild of the alt. Sometimes having a good shop rebuild is better than getting someone elses junked out core.
