Cab top is too far forward
I am in the process of replacing my top on my 1987 Cab. Everything is off and I have already repalced my interior and am now about to put the new top back on. The fram however is out of adjustment by about 1/2 inch forward on both sides. So when I try to close the top the locking mechanism does not fit into the block guides atop the windshield. Even when I disconnect the transmission arm and make it free to move it is still off. I even tried a few adjustmets of the A pillar pivot points and I move the butterfly bracket around below the transmission. No significant movement occured. If I apply great pressure to the top and push it back I can get the fingers into the guides but I did not fully close the top this way as I did not want to jump out and damage anything when I open it.
Since it was ok before I removed the top and I did not adjust anything that would have moved it forward, my only reasoning is that the window bonnet top section pulls the frame back that 1/2 inch via tension when it it attached to the rear frame. For those who have replaced their tops, is this the reason my frame is too far forward? thanks eric |

Are you replace the top fabric, or the entire top? That's not clean to me. If it's just the fabric, then it sounds like a problem with fabric tension - or lack thereof.
When I put a top on that has been off of a car, I get it set on the car with all of the mounts loose and easy to wiggle. Then I latch the top to the windshield, and work backwards adjusting and tightening the mounts. It usually takes a couple cycles, and you should probably re-do it again after the first warm day when the top will stretch a bit.

Sorry if I was not clear. I never removed the frame. There was nothing wrong with it. I only removed the fabric and am replacing that.
thanks eric |

Not that it's the same, but on the manual top there is a rod that's like a turnbuckle that adjusts this. It runs from a solid point in the inside of the body. (Behind the side cover) to an arm on the top. You lengthen and shorten this to adjust where the front edge of the top meets the windsheild frame.
Maybe there's something simular on your automatic top?

The top frame is fine , the tension of the new top will bring the frame back into alignment . If your top was working fine before you removed the old top then leave it alone .

I started this project March of 04 when I removed the top. Then I was not able to spend any time on it till now. I figured something may have gone awry in that time.

Have you had your shop sprayed for Mechanical Elves? This is a symptom.
