997-look body conversion kit for 996...available yet?
A friend of mine just bought a "new" midnight blue 1999 996 Carerra 2, and we were talking about how much better the new 997 looks in the front. To me, the rear end is hardly changed from both models. He bought the car with a small hit in the front, so he needs to replace one fender, a headlight assembly, bumper cover, and possibly the hood.
How hard it would be to update his car to the 997 look? Would the fenders, hood and bumpers just bolt on, or did they significantly alter the body structure for the 997? Considering the popularity of updating early 911s to the big bumper '74-up look back in the 70s and 80s, I think there would be a market for such an update kit for the 996. Not to mention that the looks are a big improvement! Especially since 996s are getting cheap these days (he only paid $22K! It was damaged though). Seen any available yet? |

I'm figuring it's only a few more months before they show up in "Excellence". I'd think its almost a certainty that it will happen, only a question if your friend will want to wait.
Would he want it in steel or could he put up with a "resin" (FG or CF)based panel?

I thought the 997 had a little different rear. Looked a little more masculine but I would have to put them side by side to tell. 997 is such an improvement in looks over the 996.
My guess is to ask one of the salvage yards. They would know best. Michael

Perfect timing! He's got the mounting points lined up now and was just about to order body panels. He fixed the hood (only a small dent), and it looks like these kits don't require a new hood, right? It will probably be cheaper to buy this kit than to buy OEM/ aftermarket stock parts.
I'll forward him these links. Good looking update, don't you think? I'll send pics when he gets his 996 finished. ![]() Last edited by jkarolyi; 03-10-2005 at 01:54 PM.. |

It's definitely an improvement, cosmetically.
In that last before/after shot, it looks like the owner got himself a convertible top in the bargain, as well. ![]()
