Talking Ho-Made Powdercoat Oven

DISCLAIMER: DONT BUILD ONE. THIS IS NOT INSTRUCTIONS TO BUILD ONE. THIS IS TO BE USED OUTDOORS ONLY. POWDERCOAT IS FLAMABLE. THIS IS DANGEROUS. TAKE YOUR PARTS TO A POWDERCOAT SHOP. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU BUILD ONE.

Ho-Made Powdercoat oven

Coal smoker - Great Outdoors Grill Co $90
Gas shop heater - Grainger $90
8 Gallon propane tank $56

Powdercoat gun kit from HF $96

I am able to hit 480 deg F.

All I did was cut a square hole in the bottom of the smoker and inserted the shop heater.
It is 36" tall and works great!

Todd: Is your last name MacGuyver by any chance?

The only thing I would consider adding is another heater element at the top to get more even heating throughout the cabinet.

I applaud your ingenuity! Nice job. Very clever.

Thanks, I think someone on the BBS did something similar.

Heat rises so it does not seem to be a problem

I spent 75 hrs on thanksgiving weekend inside one, with another diver no less. Haven't dove since. I might be FUBAR and looking for a new career.
Nice oven

holy crap, I just took a look at your site. Those are some fine looking chambers boss. If they had those offshore nobody would ever get out.
they say my COLD spots aren't disqualifying, but more bone scans will tell all. We'll see table was royal navy 72 I believe

I grew up with my mum working for Comex... Spent many weekends with friends "camping" in decomissioned decompression chambers and pretending we were submarine captains

Nice work. I built a larger one. YOurs will work great. One heating element is all you need. The parts will bake evenly. Use two thermometers if needed to check temp differentials. btw, that box is small enough you won't need them.

Nice oven
Sorry to hear about this. how exactly did you get 'bent'? As a relatively new diver, this is something that is always in the back of my mind.. Hope you'll be able to dive again, soon..

Back to topic. I have been powdercoating brake calipers for 6 months now and use a toaster oven with a thermocouple for temperature verification. I need a larger over for powdercoating larger items, this is a great idea..

Heres my high-tech set-up

$239,000 base price or $5615/mo lease?
Is that a Lamborghini Murcielago, or a house in Des Moines?

without hijacking anything it was a 200/40 gas dive type II hit both knees. NO real reason, some people get bent and some don't. There are other factors as well. You could follow all the rules and still get bent, with no real reason fot it.
the chambers used offshore cost a tenth of that price above
enough about that, go do some powdercoating
