Paint dilemma?
Not usually a guy who can't make a decision. But this one is killing me.
Trying to decide on new paint for my car. Both colors are something they could have easily used on the original IROC cars. I am looking period paint colors with a little twist for originality. I think there was an aubergine IROC car and the Orange is very close to signal orange. So the choices are down to a metalic Eggplant/ Aubergine color that was available for the 993s. (amaranth violet?) It is a little darker than the original aubergine pictured here. (anyone have a decent picture of this color on a 993) All new black trim if that matters. Here is the basic 911 configuartion we are painting. ![]() ![]() Ya gotta love Aubergine! ![]() ![]() or this.. ![]() Or the special order Audi Pupaya Orange I looked at today. It is a funny looking duck mind you. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by rdane; 01-01-2005 at 12:22 AM.. |

I can't help with photo-chop, but here's a pic of Jim Calzia's lightweight early S in aubergine.

If it were my choice, I would go with that Orange, OR the original Aubergine. I think that modern metallics do not look just right on an early period car.
Makes it kind of ricer, IMHO. Please choose something that you will be pleased to look at for yrs to come...

tricky. im in the same boat, but im thinking about some of the early 356 colours for my 73 RSR. they look so different-like the washed out greens and blue/greys, but i don't know if they will work with such an aggressive body.

I love orange. If it weren't such a big job to change colors, I would do mine in orange.
I may have to do a ground up project car just to get orange. Check through this thread:I'd like to see some other ORANGE Porsches!

Stay away from dark metalic colors . They are a pain in the butt. They also look much better with lots of chrome . I have a darker blue on one of my cars and I spend to much time keeping the paint looking good

Okay, I am not a photoshop pro, but I like trying my hand at these things, because each time I get a bit better. Since the white in the starting photo looks matte there is nothing I can do to make the purple and orange glossy. I'm simply not that good. So here are my best attempts. Personally I say go with the purple it is less trendy.
![]() ![]() The purple one looked a lot better in photoshop. Oh well the orange one turned out well.

Mine will be Fly Yellow. I thought seriously about some of the early orange colors but was not sure my Cork/Black interior would mix well...plus the wife really rolled her eyes at the thought ;-)
Go for the Orange if your interior will work with it.

Rdane,
I would go with the Pupaya orange. It is like a new twist on retro color. Will look great on the IROC like body. Also, there is a very light grey/green that I've seen show up on the board once or twice that is very cool and unusual. I will hunt around and see if I can find it. Al

Purple, Orange, OTHER
Just to confuse the issue, check out this early green. Don't know whose car this is and I apologize for stealing the photos from a previous post. Has Washington plates, may be worth a look. It's a mild color that I think would look great on a very agressive car.

Speed Yellow!
My vote is for Speed Yellow, like the '97 C4S I use to have. This color turns heads and looks fast standing still.

And other vote for "speed yellow". I voted for the orange because you gave us, only two choices.

I think Yellow...speed yellow or fly yellow...might go with the cork/black interior better than orange would. Mine goes in for paint in a week or so and I'm still between these two yellows as to which to go with. Rdane, you told me the other day in a PM that you are a "Fly Yellow" fan...no? BTW, are you replacing the chrome trim with black or powder coating it?

Mark I am a big fan of Ferrari or Fly Yellow. This is one of my favorite cars in fly yellow. My car is about to be painted and will be done by mid month. Window trim is newly painted and black. Headlights wil have body colored painted trim rings.
My orginal color was Mocha brown...I bet it is very similar to your "UPS brown" since we have 78 and 79 cars. ![]() Last edited by rdane; 01-01-2005 at 12:12 PM.. |
