Hard shift second

My 84 Carrera is hard shifting into second gear. What I mean is that I must pull back very hard on the stick. I'm going to replace all the shift bushings when I have the time but I have a feeling that not going to solve the problem. Any chance this is a common problem with this year 911? If it is how do I fix it? Thanks

Have this problem as well. Do a search on this and you'll find quite a bit. I believe it's the second gear synchro and am waiting on a future tranny rebuid. In the meantime, if you shift slowly (one member said "one mississippi" works, and that's just about right) then the shift should improve. I tend to not think about it anymore since my body has adapted to the problem and most of the time it's pretty smooth. Bushings are never a bad idea. By the way, this is common to the 915 tranny that was used for a lng, long time so not just confined to the '84's. Hope this helps.

Welcome to personality of the 915 Tranny! :-)
What you describe from 1st to 2nd is a common report.
Replacing the shift bushings (cup, shift rod , and coupler) will help. Also try Swepco 201 tranny fluid as it may help a little too.

For me, 1st to 2nd improved a little with the bushings, and Swepco helped more with 3rd through 5th shifts. Not night and day changes, but small subtle improvements.
Hope this helps!!

Ultimate help is going to be a tranny rebuild.

It is common.....

most of the time,1st and second go out first, have you pulled the drain plug to make sure the fluid has no metal?? Heres a suggestion, theres some stuff at kragen called "lucas" they have several different applications, fuel, rack, tranny etc..After your bushings and adjustment, try that stuff,it does help.. i used it on my old integra"yahyah..import i know" but it helped quite a bit, till i sold it..yah!!!
