Question CA Emissions Question

Stupid question:

How easy is it to make a non-CA '83 SC so that it will pass CA emissions? The air pump is long history.

My wife is looking at a position North of Fremont.

Very hard, you must put everything back the way it is supposed to be. An 83SC has a cat converter, and no airpump. There is no exception.

i think by 83 they were 50 state cars. that would mean it should pass if in good tune, stck exhaust with a good cat.

There is no such animal. In 83 US model 911's were 50-state cars. It needs to have the stock CIS system, plus a cat converter and an oxygen sensor to pass the visual.

If it's been messed with just sell it locally & buy another one when you get to Calif......lots of 'um out here in GOOD cond. at very reasonable prices....& all the smog stuff is intact PLUS the seller usually provides the buyer with a smog cert......

GOOD LUCK !!!

Sounds like I'll do OK then! I thought the '83 had the air pump cause I have the wiring.

O2 sensor, CAT, original exhaust, got them all! Never had to do a smog check before...

Thank you!!!!

If you're planning on buying a house anywhere near Fremont, the smog issue will be the least of your worries, at least financially. That's some expensive real estate in the bay area.

Hopefully your looking about 100 miles north of Fremont... I just left the Fremont area and I couldnt be happier.
The Fremont Police dept issued a press release a month ago telling everyone with a burgler alarm they will not respond when it goes off. They also stopped investigating auto theft. Strange.

Smogging that car should be no problem. Those 3.0s run nice and clean. I know nobody that could not pass if the car runs right.

I second all that's been said about the local housing market and Fremont. I'd still move as close as possible to work, since commuting is hell. Look at home prices and rent prices before committing to move. I thought I had done my homework, but by the time I was ready to buy, I had serious sticker shock. House alarm? Get a dog, something respectable over a hundred pounds, and if it goes off, no cops will be necessary. Also note that you will have to register all your Texan handguns that you will certainly import to our state!

When you smog the car just make sure you get it pre-tested to see if it passes. You don't want to get tagged as a gross polluter on your first test.
