Aluminum deck lid
How rare is an aluminum deck lid and how should I go about stripping the old paint off to restore it?
Should I use it or is it too rare? Should it become wall art?

Where do you find this stuff?
![]() they were not super rare. I would use a chemical stripper. followed by a scotchbrite pad with very little pressure. If its in good condition, just scuff the paint and shoot over it. the work well as long as you don't push down to close the decklid.

I'll ask my restorer how he stripped mine. He did have a hell of time filling and sanding out the small dimples in it.

I'd keep the AL lid one way or the other. I'd probably save it and keep it for a conv piece, and use F/g instead.

These lids are great! They deserve to be used even if they take a few bumps.

Lid Weights
Stock 65/68 Metal 14.7 lbs. (latch, no grille)
Fiberglass Ducktail on steel frame 13.3 lbs. (no latch or grille) Aluminum 5 lbs. (no latch or grille) Does someone have the all fiberglass weight. And, the later all metal lid without the early center bar? Bob Last edited by Fleming; 03-18-2005 at 07:14 AM.. |

Here is what I had in my wt. database on these items:
stock steel engine lid w/metal gril, no hinges 15.8 fiberglass engine lid, Rennspeed 4.0 Bob - what kind of scale did you use for these items? a bath scale? postal scale?

There is another part to this story.
The 911s that had the alu deck lid also had an alu license plate panel. I made sure those cars also had alu hardware and bracket for the alu Colorado license plate. These may also have been the cars with the OE lightweight mufflers. Best, Grady

Just another thought for this thread....the license panel in aluminum was repro'd, unfortunately not the deck lid....

Randy my measurments were on a grams scale.
I converted down to pounds. The raw numbers are Steel=5480 gr. Fiberglass on Steel=4985 gr. and Alum=1895. The repro alum license panel is junk, the bumper openings vary over 1/2" from side to side and take a ton of reworking to level. The lower bracket spot welds pop off. Grady, Aluminum hinges, stock shape or 911R style? Bob |

Bob,
I have seen aluminum, stock appearing, hinges on some race cars back then. Not 911R style. You had to use a hood prop because there weren’t any lifts. Best, Grady
