PELIPORN!!! Targa top rebuild, '86 - photojournal

Started because stitching in vinly was coming undone. Too expensive to have the shop dissassemble so did it myself. They restitched the vinyl for $40 and guided me on the reassembly. Kudos to Matt and John at All City Convertible in Kirkland, Wa.

Still in process - need to attach the vinyl then other parts.
Burlap worn, use rayon - wrap over the edge;
Foam worn, use 1/4" headliner foam from fabric store (probably a nice place to pick up chicks for some, not for me Don't wrap over, cut to edge, apply glue to edge of foam then press together once cured.
Contact cement from hardware store - 2 pints so far.
Less than $100 so far, 4-5 hours over 3-4 week time.

Wow,

You must have real good medical insurance, my HMO refuses to work on my nine eleven- said it has pre-existing conditions!

Nice work on the top, your way more ambitious than most of us.

Best,
Rutager

Yeah. You should move to Washington, my kids, fish, cars and lizard are covered, but not the ex! Actually was working on it at my office, light day. Exam tables work great for projects. Also in my basement, garage and minivan whenever I have a spare moment. It's really fun using contact cement in a small space

Hi sunlion, I noticed you put new little "condoms" on the rear guide pins. I did the same some time ago because mine were disintegrated. What I did not do was to get all the small pieces that the old "condoms" integrated into out of the guide holes. I had problems fitting the Targa top back on. It was just too tight and I could barely get it into the front slots. Finally I realized that I should make sure no more old plastic pieces are deep in the guide holes. I did not see anything but I got in there with a small spiral drill bit attached to a hand vice. The drill bit was small enough not to ruin the hole walls. I got a lot of small plastic pieces out. No wonder the newly covered guide pins did not fit into the holes anymore. After I got everything out the Targa top fitted perfectly again.

You're a sick puppy , but I believe if you use words like "ruched" you could be in luck

better hearing that than sound of the silicone glove snap.......ben

all kiddind aside it looks like you are doing a great job, was it difficult to replace the material on webbing strips etc.
photos are great, do you have any "hints"? not trying to be critcal ....just would like a little more write up as many of us are contemplating taking on this task.
regards, ben

porwolf - I'll be sure to check those holes.

And yes, its quite funny having all you macho men sit in front of me with your knees buckling as I snap the glove.

I have so many funny stories I could tell, can't make this stuff up. I should just start a thread but I'll start with this one.....had a patient once who is a judge, came in for his physical, time for the prostate exam, I said to him right after I snapped the glove, "Judge, if I ever find myself in front of you in your courtroom, and you remember this time, please remember it fondly."
