The build continues, part 5 or same old stuff..

just a different day. While I am really excited about the project finishing up, I figured most of you are tired of seeing a partially finished car.

I wasn't going to post again till I had paint on the car but I was asked so here ya go :)

Couple of the previous posts on the same subject if you want the whole story.

More on the ST flares and the most recent coments on shaving the rain gutters.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/208533-st-flares.html

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/209510-cutting-off-rain-gutters.html

Since the last up date I decided something was missing to make this car really mine and finally finished. Didn't want a Turbo or RSR look but something more like the earlier ST style flares. A bunch of reasons but the most important was no spacers and I wanted to stay with 8" and 9" Fuchs. It would be nice that the flares actually fit the wheels as Porsche would have intended. Ruf's normal looking 10" flare on Yellowbird had a good deal to do with following through on this idea. As did the original STs.

I had my buddy Mark Wilson hook me up with with Ron Maxwell
from Austin TX, who most recently restored one of the early STs to concours condition. Ron gave me the idea of the hammer and dolly work on the front fenders. He had done many of them in a similar fashion. I asked Mark Israel @ Eurotech in Kirkland to do the hammer and dolly and for ideas on many other details of this car . Mark suggested he hammer and dolly the rear flares as well for a truly one of a kind car...mini turbo look. The car gained somewhere around 2+" in front and over 2" in back. All steel of course but no added weight. Not the least expensive way to do things but I really like the unique end result. Plenty of fender well now and a more open look that we are use to seeing with bigger 17" wheels on these cars or the huge flares grafted on.

Almost a IROC look...but without the "super size" and all the hassles of 9 and 11 x 15 rims and tires or the larger 17" set ups.
Not everyone's first choice I am sure but at least in the short term there is only one of them.

Every fender in now finished on the inside with just as much detail as the outside. Not something you'll see very often on any car. It is a rounded edge inside now and nothing to roll or get in the way. Also adds a good deal of strength to the fender.
You have to feel it.

Dane, did they add glass and filler on the bumpers to make the seam match?

...it's looking good!

Jeff Alton 03-22-2005 07:42 PM

I have the same bumpers to mount. Any chance I could see a pic of the mounting design? Also, what are you doing for an oil cooler opening grill?

Jeff

ipapilot 03-22-2005 07:44 PM

Hey Dane, where did you get that front splitter? Looks like one I would like, thanks!
Brian

rdane 03-22-2005 08:13 PM

Brian, the splitter is custom cut from the Kevlar, GT racing piece.
Shows up as a big blank piece. I thought I could get two out of it but not quite.

Jeff, Eurotech added some support inside on the bumper. I dropped both nerf bars this time on the bumpers. Best fit piece of glass I have bought to date from anyone. GT Racing BTW. I'll get a pic for you on my next visit. The grill is wire mesh, which Mark hand contoured and boxed to the front opening. Intake is glassed off and foam sealed to the cooler so all the air is forced through it and out the back/bottom of the car. Almost vented through the hood but this one is no race car so I used the TRE RSR body panel piece and vented down..

Souk, yes they cut the ends off, glassed them back on at the right angle and width. They then filled in what was needed, inside and out. Amazing job and a perfect fit now with hours of labor going into it. (4/5 days all told)

Refilling / refitting the MA Shaw duck for the second or third time for a perfect, show case fit. I doubt there is a duck made that isn't going to take a good deal of time to get right.

Rear bumpers extensions half way through the process on the new flare.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1111553952.jpg

They just cut off the fronts of a primered bumper (I should have thought about this earlier) and are getting ready to glass it back on and fill. Mulitiple Vicegrips are a cool tool for this job ;)

In case you missed this.

rdane 03-23-2005 08:57 AM

Don't have to decide on color yet...it is a tough one. Couple in mind though. Engine work? Yes, engine work and more HP ;)

This is one project I can't wait to see finished, Dane!

Not that the car was exactly lacking in any particular department before this facelift... ;)

island911 03-29-2005 08:40 PM

Nice.

what are you doing for the front windshield seal? Anything extra? (being that the rest is going to be so "aero")

Nader 03-29-2005 08:54 PM

It seems PNW folk like colorful cars. Maybe because it's so grey and dreary most of the year? Remember this?

rdane 04-22-2005 08:52 PM

Last mods before the engine swap and a little color. Putting the final touch on the art work of Eurotech Bodywerks.

From a bright silver to a deep blue depending on the light
...going to be an interesting color. 10 diffrent pigments in the paint code mix.

island911 04-22-2005 10:03 PM

Lil' lightening holes in the strut gussets . . . and none in that chunk of flat bar (Custom tow hook) ?

rdane 04-22-2005 10:11 PM

it is a very thin, titanium tow hook Glenn ;)

island911 04-22-2005 10:18 PM

:D uh-huh . . . and it's hollow too, right?

anyway, "coil overs" ? . .. from the looks of things, that will be one light ride.

I mean why coil-overs? I would think you could get plenty of stiffness out of t-bars (and keep the CG lower)

rdane 04-23-2005 12:55 PM

Light contrasts on the paint this morning. New word to me is the paint's "flop". This base color takes ten toners to make up the formula and has some serious "flop" ;)

HOLY CRAP!!!! That is beautiful!!!

JP911 04-23-2005 01:12 PM

Seeing paint that beautiful just scares me. If my 911 ever looked that good I don't think I could bring myself to drive it! The first bug to hit the bumper would make me cry.

Shuie 04-23-2005 01:13 PM

PorscheGuy79 04-23-2005 01:14 PM

Holy (insert profanity) mary mother of...

That is really nice, stop building my dream car DANE!

rdane 04-23-2005 01:48 PM

Thanks guys! As you can imagine I am pretty excited to see the end result.

Here is the body just before one of the last sanding efforts.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1114292673.jpg

Little problem with the new spring plates and my tweaked under body but that should be solved mid week.

Then an alignment and stoneguard to protect that pretty paint and a trip to the dyno with the new gear box and 3.6.

Two weeks and counting down now.Last decision is leave the 8/9 wheel combo or add 9s and 10s to go under those new flares.

Ya, I am excited..I admit it!

Tooth911 04-23-2005 02:40 PM

Dane nice to see the progress I will surely be glad to run you down in may!!!any dino yet?.love that color!!!

rdane 04-23-2005 06:51 PM

So Tooth, what ya driving?
