You might have to pull up carpet to get at one of the wire conections. The other wire conection is on backside of console. Mines an 85 so yours may be different. Good luck and take your time, you will get it.

Ted - I have been working on the shifter in my 86 930 - I assume it is the same. You should be able to pull the housing up over the shifter and set it to the side without disconnecting the wiring. You may have to remove the shift knob to do this as it is a tight fit.

Forget the sawzall.
1. Remove the back cover of the console 2. Remove all the screws you will now see on the side of the console holding down the little panel where the AC switches are mounted to 3. Remove the switches retainer at the front, and now remove the switches 4. Push the switch assembly off from the console 5. Remove all the screws holding the console to the body (4 or 5 screws) Once you can wiggle the console, lift it out over the shift knob and leave the wiring panel behind.

Thanks for the tips guys. It turned out to be a little more complex than expected
![]() I'll post some pics in the next day or so to help out the next poor soul who trys this!! ![]() Found shift shaft ( say that 5 times fast) bushing disintegrated, ball cup worn, so at least it wasn't a futile effort ! ![]() Ted |
