Anyone know about these wheels
These came on a 70T RSR-look project car I purchased. They are not real attractive and they machining done for the lug nuts is scary. Anybody ever seen these on a 911 before? Thanks.

Look like American Racing wheels from the 70s. I think Dan Gurney had something to do with them.

Definitely American Racing , 200 S model i believe.
The four spoke version became known as the Libre and was very popular on the datsun 510's Lug nuts should be the tube sleeve type so the mag is supported by the lug nut and not the studs- i don't see any inserts in the fastening surface in your pics, so most certainly mag wheel sleeved lug nuts are in order. Using steel or alloy oe porsche nuts will greatly increase the likelihood of cracks and non concentric mounting: Like driving 4 eggs!

someone is making reproductions now that bolt right on. Do a search for "torque thrust" wheels. I don't know if they're hub centric, but that would be what you'd want on a Porsche.
There are a lot of inferior wheels and a lot of scams out there. I'm not saying yours are bad, just that there are a lot of horror stories of people not getting what they expected. Last edited by rusnak; 05-21-2007 at 02:07 PM.. |

There were also similar models made in 60's by Daisy and US Indy. They are often referred to as "coke bottles". It seems like there is one other manufacturer that made some similar as well. Any stampings on the backside to help ID them. I like them too. I think they look nice on your car.

Thanks for the information. It looks like these wheels were more common than I thought for earlier 911s. These particular wheels are at least twenty years old because the car was sitting for this time in storage.
A few pictures of the back of the wheels. They are not hub centric as someone wrote. The lug nuts have an extended machined nose that locate the wheels to the hubs. It's kind of a lame set-up but I guess it must work. -Matt ![]() ![]() ![]()

You guys have inspired me to keep the wheels for now. I will get a look at the run-out when bolted-up to get an idea of how well they were machined. What I really do not like is that the lug nut holes are kind of oval shaped.
I may go with a machine gray or something similar for the spokes to give them an all business and no flaunting look. -Matt

A graphite color would look good as well. You probably know this already, but the oval lug holes are simply for dual bolt patterns. You would insert the appropriate washer that was designed for your make/model. There is probably a set for the Porsche bolt pattern as I have seen these on other early Porsches before.

As a side note Matt, depending on the bolt pattern, if you ever decide to sell those, you might get more out them selling to the "rat" rod crowd. They are a well liked style for the rat rod style rods they are building nowadays. If you ever do sell them, you could try the HAMB board (just google HAMB and you should find it right at the top typically). In fact, the guys on that board might be able to tell you what brand those are based on looks and measurements, if you cannot find any markings on the backside.

American Racing coke bottle mags! I have a friend who's got an original set of those for his '68 Z/28.
AR still makes 'em. http://www.americanracing.com/wheels/details.asp?wheelid=197&name=200S%20Custom%20Offset&style=402&desc=2-piece%20painted%20center,%20polished%20rim§ion=V

I will take another look this weekend to see if I can find any numbers on the back. They certainly do look a lot like the American Racing coke bottle wheels.
