Question For Guys W/ Opening Vent And Quarter Windows

This is a question for those 911s with opening vent windows and/or opening rear quarter windows (so, pre-70 I think?).

How much fresh air can you get using either or both of these, and how much wind noise results? Is the fresh air-to-wind noise ratio better (higher) than simply rolling down the door windows or opening the sunroof?

The reason I'm asking - fresh air ventilation is really weak on my '89, and I don't like the roar of driving on the freeway with the door windows or sunroof open. In back, the enclosed space can get stuffy for the kids. Now, I remember my dad had cars with opening vent windows, back when I was a kid, and how you could get all the air you wanted from those.

So I've long wondered about retrofitting the window frames from an older car to my '89, to get opening vent windows and/or opening quarter windows.

I went by EASY yesterday, and they said only a couple model years had aluminium frames, that the door window frames would fit but the quarters would be very hard to install (due to the hinges), and that I wouldn't get much fresh air anyway.

What do you think about that?

I usually run with my back vents swung out...and yes, they work. I have no experience with the new cars with the sealed windows. Jack Olsen will tell you to keep them closed on the track, though.

I have set for sale, black trim. pm me.
I swaped to lexan.
Why does Jack keep them closed?
To mitigate reversing cabin air pressure in a spin?
That is to try and avoid blowing out the windshield?

rear open 1/4 windows are great. I've spent weeks in my brothers '88 w/closed windows and it sucks. I bought my '77 from him and he would backdate if he spent more time in his commute.

door window vent makes too much noise for me.

I put in the rear opening windows in my '78 SC. The difference is unbelieveable! No more buffetting, no more wind noise. It really makes a difference at the track, especially at 125mph. Off the track, with the sunroof open, it's even better. Just like having a cab, but with no backdraft. I would do this to any 911 that I buy in the future,
well worth the effort!

What is involved in backdating a later car (I assume my Carrera and your SC are the same, as far as the quarter windows are concerned)? I'm unclear on whether new holes have to be drilled and tapped in the B-pillar for the hinges.

You need to replace the frame to get either front or rear to open.

The F. 1/4 frames can be either Al or chrome plated brass - the latter is supposed to be less likely to warp and is what I added to my '73, tho it weighs a bit more.

If you open the fronts a bit and the rears also, you get great ventilation. For a blast of air you just open the F. vents till they point at you.

The car will be noisier even with the F. vents closed. Worth it for me.

Put in all new rubber when you do this.

Here's another vent method. Next project.
