How tight??? Allen wrench nut over spindle.
The nut that threads over the spindle and pushes the washer up against the outer bearing: how tight should this be? this is the nut that has the allen wrench in it.
thanks in advance. |

on a related note, how much play should there be (if any) on the bearings when i rock the rotor back and forth?

I have a friend that claims 0.005-0.006", measured at the edge of the rotor. I adjusted mine that way and am happy.

The way he does it is to mount a dial indicator to the shock with the indicator touching the rotor near the outer edge. Rock the rotor back and forth (vertically), measure the total range of motion. Don't apply too much force or you will see motion other than just the bearing play.

The set screw should be reasonably hand-tight, so you don't need to use a ratchet or anything. There shouldn't be any noticeable play (or clunking sound) when rocking the rotor or wheel. The preload on the bearing should be fairly tight, but still loose enough that the washer below the retaining nut can be moved side-to-side with moderate force, using a flat screwdriver.
It's a Zen thing.

The Bentley guide says to tighten the nut until the washer can just be moved back and forth with a light push from a screwdriver tip. Also says the tightening torque for the Allen screw is 15 Nm (11 ft.lbs).

tighten it snug, rotate the wheel, then back off 1/8 turn, then snug the allen head.

The screwdriver method works....but note that we're talking *without* any kind of leverage applied. Snug enough so that sideways force...by hand..on the screwdriver tip... can barely budge the washer....
