Exhaust Upgrade for 88

I would like to upgrade my muffler to something better (power, sound etc)

I already have a Steve chip (which he said he would reprogram if needed) Does it need to be reprogramed??

Also can I put dual Exhaust on my car? Will it give me better power?

I have read that some suggest a Pre-muffler - do I need this also?

Thank you

Do SSI's headers/heat exchangers and MB911's muffler, it has a noticable sound and power increase. Search for MB911 or SOUK and you will find a couple sound bites that I posted of a stock 3.2L and of SSI w/MB911's muffler.

w/o also doing cams, any header is not going to do much for you. Simplest solution to better flow and sound is a premuffler, either ROW or Fabspeed, w/ a single in, single out sport muffler of your choice.

dual outs will mostly be louder and do have a tendancy to resonate anywhere between 1500 and 3000 rpm depnding on the system. If there is a dramatic difference between the left and right out then the resonance can mostly be eliminated.

the premuff and header are mutually exclusive choices, you do one or the other but not both

The chip will probably not need to be redone as the exhaust changes aren't going to be dramatic no matter what, if it's a freebee go for it

Liking an exhaust's sound charecteristics can be very subjective. If there's any way you can listen to some other 911s locally you should do so.

I agree with Bill, a good premuffler will give you maybe 6-8 RWHP and a little more aggressive sound. I would stick with the OE muffler unless you just want more sound. I dyno tested some of these combos a few years back on an 87 Carrera, and saw an 8 RWHP gain with a premuffler and the OE exhaust. Using the premuffler with a Dynamax exhaust actually lost me a few HP (not really enough to be sure of the loss - but no gain either).

The other mod I am a fan of is the MAF system. The Autothority kit is the only mass produced kit I am aware of. My car went from 182 RWHP (about 214 at the crank, which was the stock number listed in my manual) to 210 RWHP with a premuffler, MAF, and chip.

A dyno test I saw years ago found the premuff and an additional muffler tip to give excellent results.

I don't think many have seen this data performed on a late model 3.2 with just exhaust changes. AFAIK, according to Bruce Anderson, test #2 with the RUF muffler was in conjunction with a European premuffler. Test #5 most likely is just cutting a hole in the right side of the factory 2 in muffler and adding a tailpipe. You definitely notice the power and response increase when doing such a thing at the expense of noise:

I have SSI's , Steve W chip and MB911 muffler on my '86 3.2L. I would recommend this set up if heat is important to you. The sound is great, throttle response is improved, and it screams above 4000 RPM.

I'm with Bill and Zcat 3. Look at the results Steve W post. I've had MAF and a bypass on my 1987 for the last 120,000 miles. The shop I use (SC Motors in Houston) recommends modifying the stock muffler to twin outs which is cheap but loud. That'll be next since I can cap it off if I don't like it.
