oel level - owner's manual

79 SC
Did a search and didn't find the answer.

Oil level warm, idling, about 1/2 way on the dipstick. Level on the "OEL" gauge is about the middle of the white, idling.

Owner's manual says to "never" let the oil level on the oel gauge drop int the red area.

Q: When I'm driving, anything above 2k rpm, the level on the oel gauge stays in the red at the bottom and only comes up when I stop and let the engine idle.

Is this a problem? Sounds like it from the Owner's manual.

Thanks
Tom

No. Not a problem. They reference it when idling. Even then though, you can go down on oil a good ways before serious things happen. Not a recommendation, just a word of assurance.

Agreed. Go with the dipstick. Pay little attention to the man (dash guage) behind the curtain .

Might sound obvious, but when cheking the dipstick be sure your shirt tails (or sensitive body parts) aren't dangling too close to the spinning pulleys.

Are the 2 oil pumps? ...one to lube the engine, and one to scavenge the cranckase and pump back to the oil tank?
Guess I was worried that the engine was overfilling and keeping the tank low.

There are two sides to the pump..a pressure side and a scavange side.

Oil level can only be accurately checked on our earlier dry sump cars when all three things are in-play:
- level ground
- idling speed ( say 800-900 rpm)
- engine up to about 180 degF.

If any *one* element is out of whack...all bets are off!

Best to keep the ideal level about mid-point. Too full and the excess ( when hot) finds its way into the air intake where it's plumbed...and not only makes a mess but it gives you a false sense of "high oil consumption".
