Got a new set of rear tires fitted (Pirelli). The left rear one was balanced with 30 grams and 15 grams on the inside of the Fuchs (top/bottom). The right rear gave some problems. After rotating the tire several times on the rim and after turning the inside of the tire to the outside eventually it was balanced with 35 grams and 75 grams.
Is this normal? To me it seems to be a little much of balancing weights. Thanks, Kees. 911 carrera coupe 1985 Pirelli P6000 215 60 R15 N1 94W |

Sounds like unbalanced tire. Ask for another one.

75 grams is a lottttttt, if I had a tire that had to have almost 3ozs of weight on one side, and over 1 ounce on the other side, it would not get sold to me. They can get another tire off the rack and try it, sounds like a defective tire to start with, if you have no wheel issues, like bent, dirt or mud stuck on it to throw the balance off. I don't think an experienced and competent tire man would install that tire. Just my .02

I had a kid try to put 4 oz on one of mine. I told him to rotate the tire 180o and try again. It could also be a wheel with bad balance.
You can search on my name for that thread.

The answer lies in how the tire/wheel drives. To me, if it's balanced at all speeds, you can't ask for more. If not, then I'd try another tire. If you've already driven this tire, it may not be the easiest thing to do in talking the dealer into removing it and restocking it as a used tire. It obviously passed the factory inspection for being within thier tolerance.
(I tend to think after all the tire failures that have benn publicized recently, that tires that come out of the factory are decent units. However, some of us are more discerning than others. That's when it comes down to what that individual tire is doing.) I have worked in a tire shop mounting and balancing tires and studied the theory somewhat extensively. I have never rejected a tire on the basis of how much weight it took, only on it's inabillity to balance at ALL speeds. Lots of factors contribute. But, the first thing I would want to know about that tire is the runout at the tread. If it's not exactly round, you have a strong case for a new tire. edited for spelling, which was abominable and maybe still not all correct

Thanks to you all.
I've send an email to the tireshop and will wait for their answer. I will let you know. Thanks again, Kees. |
