993 transplants exhaust questions?

I have been reading the many posts on 993 transplant exhausts. Things seemed to have changed on a monthly basis as to what is available and how well it works. I see a lot of guys have changed their plans mid stream or done it at least twice. Looking for a clean install as well as the rest, ie, power and heat. (hard to not look at SSIs and sport muffler and think the 993 transplants aren't really the best option design wise)

What is the "best" answer in a '79 currently.

Best as in power with no heat.

Best, as in heat and power would be good too

Check with the 'Instant-G' web site. Get in touch with Steve, he will be
able to point you in the right direction. He has done many modifications
[specializes in 3.6 transplants into early cars]. He has a fabricator that makes exhaust systems for this type of application.

G&H ??? will make you cool headers with the tail pipes to match your rear valance, or like most of us B&B headers with an after market muffler, I have the stock B&B muffler, with small tail pipes, Kevin

Get them with heat. The 'gains' with no heat systems are miniscule IMO as to not bother.
The I-G setup is very, very nice.

Fabspeed offers a Flowmaster with stainless pipe get-it-welded-yourself setup that others on this board have on their 3.6s and are quite happy with.
You've heard my car with a 3.6 con Flowmaster.......I love it....it is too loud for some. Cop bait you say?

It boils down to:
What you want. How 'noisy'. Heat. Price.
For you dane, I'd say the I-G setup.

I just talked to Steve at Rennsport about this yesterday. They offer a GHL custom made to their specs that they claim is worth 17-20hp over the factory stuff. I believe it has been verified on an engine dyno as well. However, I think it is even more than the instant-g setup

17-20 over a *stock 993 exhaust system*?
I don't normally doubt Steve Weiner, but........

If I did it again, I would keep the 993 HE's -

I understand your caution. I'm on my second system and now considering another change. I have the stock HE's (gilette outlets) and heat. My first system was cobbled together by a local muffler (non Porsche) shop. Shoddy work but reasonably quiet. My mechanic talked me into tossing it and replacing with a custom built setup (see pic).

On the track, without baffles in, with track chip installed, the throttle response, torque, and overall performance is stunning...far better than with the original system. But boy oh boy...it's loud...even with a helmet on! With baffles in and street chip, it's still too loud for my taste, so I'm thinking about an I-G "happy crab" setup (http://www.instant-g.com/Products/Exhausts/993Dual-In-Out/index.html), at least for the street. Has anyone seen/heard the I-G system? Just how quiet is it on a scale of 1 to 10 (one is stock and 10 is with no mufflers at all)?

Thanks,

I have the Timmons/Mcneil muffler, with the 993 heat exchangers. The muffler wasn't cheap, but beautifully crafted.Dan

i had Paul at Cyntex do my whole swap. I have all the little goodies including chip, air filter, flywheel, clutch etc. I also have the Mcniel setup...all hand crafted 304 SS with heat box and CF tube looks great (you can see the muffler etc with the car just sitting there). I have never in my life seen a motor rev so quick or pull so hard. It is IMHO very loud. I have had several folks actually say i heard you coming etc. Having said that I have carefully pulled right next to several cops and not had an issue yet.

In the end I like the sound....screw the neighbors =P

Is the Timmons/McNeil muffler the same as the "happy crab" seup on Steve's web page? If so...Blue82...what is your opinion of the volume? Do you have the resonated tips, etc? If it's still quite loud, I'll pass.

Beamonk....if you have oval shaped outlets on your HE's, you have Bischoff (more common). If they're round with triangular flanges, they're Gillett.

Thanks,

I originally had the cats with resonators...that was real loud. I can live with it now.Beamonk, the Gillette exchangers has a round outlet. Bischoff has oval outlets. I think it's stamped on the xchangers.

Saw the happy crab write up here:
I got crabs this weekend!

Looks like a good system. I have only been around two transplants to date. One was way too loud for me and wasn't impressed by the dyno numbers for what was involved in the build. I suspect the exhaust was part of that. The second had good dyno numbers and is actually a pleasant tone inside and out. But it is cobbled together with original HEs. Not really something I want duplicated on my car.

The 3.6 transplant is a cool project. But when you look at what a set of SSIs and a early muffler does cosmetically and performance wise most of the after market stuff looks pretty cheezy so far.

Timmin's is the exception with some of the new stuff he is offering but $2500?

I didn't realise the whole heat/exhaust/muffler was such an issue until recently. Easy thing to miss trying to get the right engine to plug in there.

Mike. Happy crab and Timmons/ Mcneil are one in the same. I would shoot you a photo but my digital camera is dead.Yep mine have the resonators. They were a pain to install. The bracket tha t mounts the muff to the engine required me to remove the bumper. The pic on timmons site shows a strap. Outside of that ,they fit great.Dan

rdane. My cooling system was also done 3 times. (1) 72 row spoiler mounted cooler. (2) Same front cooler with my carrera cooler with -12 lines(3) Same coolers as version (2) with-16 lines. Not proud of the 3 attempts... oh well. #3 works extremely well.
