Best sounding EARLY 911 engine POLL

Best sounding EARLY 911 engine ever Poll! Assume all are stock and using the original induction systems. Remember, SOUND only...hp and torque don't matter! Then, post WHY you like that one's sound so much. Just curious.

RSR 'cause I once had a ride in one on a racetrack at speed and from inside it was heaven

I guess I'm not enough of a connesseur of engine sounds to vote. The biggest difference that I've heard between most of the engines listed is size. The bigger the engine, the bigger the dB. But given the everything else being the same, I doubt that most people would be able to tell the difference is a blind test.

I'd have to vote RSR, with it's high compression and hot cams combined with a free flowing exhaust. none of the others have the sport exhaust(or anything other than stock) that sounds so wonderful

Your right Tim -- I agree. E's sound better then T's, and S's better still. Anything with a 906 or full-race cam sounds the best. But a 906 versus an RSR, both with MFI and megaphones? They both sound pretty much the same except the RSR will be louder.

I've Driven a lot of great sound'n Porsches... my own 2.7RS spec 9.5:1 rebuild sounds pretty damn good...

But HANDS DOWN, the '68 T/R of Stephen Childs with it's 2 liter Carrera 6/R motor, is the best by far...

Even with it's rally sport muffler uncorked, the primary sound you hear is from the induction. The 46's, running only rain shields, go through about 4 distinct octaves through the working RPM range. All the way to about 7800RPM. Coupled to a 'close' gear box, you are ALWAYS in one of those octaves............ IT IS ADDICTIVE!!!

If you wanted to record the best early 911 sound I think this car would be the one...

I would vote for 2.8RSR just because of it's more animal-like sound. Thanks to Chuck (and Stephen generousity) I was allowed to drive this amazing '68 T/R with its 911R engine - that's a close second in my book. I could easily tell the difference between these two car's motors blindfolded. The overrun of a 2.8 RSR is an entirely different sound - more ripping and less breathy. IMO, these awesome machines are the top of the heap in terms of Porsche engine sounds - just beautiful and awe inspiring standing still!

best I ever heard was a factory 2.8 RSR engine w/ high butterfly induction set up in a real 1973 Carrera RS.

Thing sounded great at idle and ripping through the gears too.

The best sounding 911 I have ever heard was a 1973 T RS clone with MFI and a bursh muffler.
It was Christian Van Fleet's car, before he put the carbed 3.2 in it.
His car is much faster now but it sounded soooo sweeeet before.
That was what all 911s should sound like.

You can't beat carburated engines for sound. MFI just does not do it for me (OK.... I would not kick the MFI motor out of bed for eating crackers).
You forgot the 2.5L short stroke w/ 46mm PMO's Although I'm a little biased.

Put your DVD or tape of the movie Lemans in the player...listen to the street car in the opening scenes...

Jeff Higgins' '72T w/ factory sport muffler.

I had the pleasure of following Jeff to the last XXX get together with the top off my Targa.

Couldn't even hear the '90 C2 that was between us.

I had a carb'd 2.2T with a max flow muffler and stock otherwise. It had the best sound, rumble or howl and when i would come into town people 's head would do whiplash and I had a few stop me and ask what was in it! It sounded so sweet but had to make way for the Tim Allen "More Power"!

Not sure if this will work, but was testing a new video/camera phone

http://philgarner.net/680911T.3gp

http://philgarner.net/911Tvideo.3gp

The second video you can hear my 911 with PMO's/SSI/Monty muffler
Hope it works

It's a fact...I did. Also, the car making those wonderful sounds is NOT the 2.0 '69S that Steve McQueen's son displays from time to time...

Heh heh heh... Pretty loud, huh? I wish my wife thought as highly of it. With my gradually improving (read: stiffening/tightening) suspension, magic dissappearing interior parts, and now the sport muffler from hell, she thinks I'm "ruining" it. Oh well, Alex likes it...
