Keep the 930? what would you do?

So I bought an 88 930 last year. The car had a great ppi, needed only a cv joint. It had 148k on the clock and I have put it up to 152k. The tranny was rebuilt and I think the engine was done at some time but the po only had receipts for the tranny. I was a bit nervous at first but I got the ppi and bought it.

Well here's my dilema. I don't think I am a turbo type, I love the car and drive it as much as possible. But, and it's a big but, I hate the lag and like driving my 77 a bit more cept for the brakes they are amazing. So here's what I am thinking and would like the advice. I would like to sell the 930 and get a nice c4 so I can drive it all year round. Is this a dumb idea? What could I expect to get for a 930 with this many miles on it? Otherwise I think it is in great shape. Thats why I got it, I wanted one that I wouldnt be afraid to drive. Not one of them low milage rotten seal garage queens. How much is a decent c4? What should I look for? Anyone wanna trade?

Too bad you're not looking for an SC.............

I'd love a 930.

If its an 88 930 with the G50 tranny you have one of the most desireable 930s there is, even if its got quite a few miles on it.

If its all sorted out it would be an ideal HP junkie project since a rebuild and a few upgrades would be ideal for a car with that many miles.

Assuming the paint and interior is in good condition it could be worth between $15K and $25K.

Whoops, my bad, I forgot it was 89 instead of 88.

My suggested values will need to be decreased by several thousand bucks.

I myself opted to do the 993 conversion to an SC over the 930 fot the exact reasons you state...it all came down to throttle response for me.....

I think you need to sell the 930 as you only want us to confirm the decision you have already made (but don't want to admit to yourself).

The 930 is a beast, but it takes a certain type of owner to enjoy its personality. Nothing wrong with not being that type.

If it's the turbo lag that bothers you, find your self a M491 (3.2 N/A, no lag)

Wanna trade for a well sorted SC+$

If the car runs good, keep it. You will regret it if you get rid of it. A good 930 has no substitute.

all good responses and I do love the 930. It is in great shape besides being red (gotten me a ticket already) Cop actually said I'm not cutting you a break, you're driving a porsche. Luckily the Da was a little more leinient. I do love driving it, but I already have a 911 that I don't drive in the winter. I would like an all year round daily driver but I've never driven a c4 or know much about them.

350HP930 03-30-2005 09:10 AM

I didn't want red either, but beggars can't be choosers. Since then it has grown on me and makes it the stereotypical guards red 930.

Me and my friends also suspected it would turn me into a ticket magnet, but strangely enough I have been let off a lot of times in that car for speeding and fooling around specifically cause I was driving a red 911 turbo.

I love SC's but the wife would never let me have another car that only comes out on nice days.

????? Seeems like you got one and maybe two drivers unless its an early 911. But if it isn't concours pre SC 911, drive it anyway. Its only worth a few thousand. It it turns into a rust bucket, so waht just buy another. They're cheaper than a Ford Focus.

And the 930?? Its fine unless you're looking for ABS or ASR or something better in the snow.....drive it.

I have an 88 cab that is 100% stock that I commute with almost everyday - even in the rain. I love the car. The turbo lag really doesn't bother me that mutch as there are some day that I don't even make it out of first. I'm sure you know that there are things you can to to mitigate turbo lag like swapping out the cams. SC cams are supposed to make a world of difference. This modification would cost less than buying a 993, no?

BTW...I wanted the red! :D

wrx paul 03-30-2005 11:30 AM

I guess most of you are right, I kinda have my mind made up already. A c4 on blizzaks blasting around is my ultimate winter car!

Scooter 03-30-2005 12:36 PM

I was considering a C4 ('90) prior to finding the right car for me (a low milage '92 C2). If I would have found a C4 in the condition of my C2 prior to finding my car, then I would have probably purchased a C4. The C4 is fun to drive. It actually drives almost identical to a C2, just with a little more understeer. If you want to drive in the snow and when it is dry, then I say go for the C4! Good luck with your decision/search.

ianc 03-30-2005 11:14 PM

What would I do? Sell my other 911, keep the 930, and buy a beater.

dickster 03-30-2005 11:31 PM

sort out the turbo lag or swap for my 86 3.2. did i say that?:D

look 171 03-31-2005 02:09 AM

Change your ring and pinion, and the lag will feel like if it is gone. As a matter of fact, it feels like someone gave an extra 50 hp. Too bad you are on the right coast, If not you are welcome to drive mine. I have all the mods, so it go like hell.

Don't sell the car. Are you sure you want a 964?
