Painting the car - Day 7 - Time slipping away

Well, it's day 7 and the body is in primer finally. Yesterday the fenders, doors, and bumpers were done, but I forgot the camera! So as of now, everything has been DTM Epoxy primed and then sprayed with 3 coats of dark grey high build primer.

The car is at an body shop that rents stalls - they also have a few staff that are pretty experienced. Why am I telling you this? Well one of the guys has be subcontracted to do the filler on the flares.

As a further note, there is an experienced painter (I've seen his stuff and it's really nice) who will spray the paint I supply for $125

While I initially wanted to EVERYTHING myself, in the last week I have a new-found appreciation for the work that these guys do. I feel it would be false economy to not hire them to do the flares and final coat. If I screwed it up, I would second guess my decision for quite a while.

Well, I kind of feel like a chicken for not doing it all, but at least the car will look nice!

Regards,
Andrew M

Big progress so far and looking really good. Looks like the fellow did a neat job on filling the flairs as well. From what I could tell from your earlier installment, they were braised on?

Keep us up to date, I love projects like this!

Hey, you're doing more than most of us would (IMHO) in this department...

ianc- Yup - the flares were braised on with a coat of filler on top. Right now they are rough filled in and will need some additional work. I think he's going to finish them up tomorrow and then it's time for more primer.

Ed - Thanks for the positive vibe

Great stuff Andrew - and I agree with you. If you have quality tradesmen at hand and the price is right, why risk a screw-up? Like you I tend to do everything myself, but there are some things (such as paint) where practice makes perfect... if you haven't had practice - it won't be perfect

If I were you, I'd think strongly about leaving it in the dark grey primer. Looks like a ducati dark, and accentuates the shape of the body. Nice work.

Naaah, there's too many cool early car colors to paint it. Why go for ghetto?

Yeah that dark grey really got me pumped - I almost thought about changing the colour to a Dark Metallic Grey, but I think I'll stick with Oxford Blue.

Thats a great price for a prof. paint job. You could probably do it yourself but Id leave it to those guys that have done it before and practice on your house or wifes car first! Awesome project keep the pics coming.

Oxford Blue is a great color.

Can't wait to see the next phase!

Well, the next phase is lthe tedious task of lots of block sanding and repriming, and then sanding again
