Porsche whaletail.
There was what I thought was an aftermarket tail on my car, but at the recommendation of old porshe guy in spfd, I looked for a 911# and sure enough it was there. Was this tail a factory option, or a dealer add on? Any body remember these tails? And are they desirable at all? It looks to big on my 77 2.7, plus I found a duck tail for it.

Think I have the same one. All black rubber type stuff. Does look a bit large but keeps the tail down in a long lonely straight road her in NE Colorado.

Tails were an option since '73. There were a few different types. First, the duck, then the whale which is the same shape whether it's the all rubber kind, the 3L Carrera kind, or the early turbo kind, the late turbo tail which is similar to the late Carrera tail except the Carrera has a rear lip, but the turbo tail has a lip in the rear and on the sides. Those are the main types of tail pre-90.

That's a stock tail, and is considered a "whale" tail because of it's shape. It's very similar to the early turbo and 3.0 Carrera tail. It also weighs a bunch from what I've read on this board.

In my opinion, I encourage your choice on adding the duck tail. It looks much better on an earlier car.

Yep, polyurethane rear spoiler used up to '80, is the number 911 512 019 02 ? The grill looks like a separate piece in the PET but not in your pic.

I have the same on my '79 SC. They were factory and are quite rare. Change it to a duck tail if you like but don't sell it. The only other one I have seen is on a 3.0 litre Carrera. I still have mine as it looks O/K and is unique.

Yup, they were originally available in '76 on Carrera 3.0s
