Cam O ring

My Carrera has a small oil leak. I had it checked out. I was told it is from the cam "O" ring. They want $600 to fix the leak. On a scale from one to ten how hard of a repair is this. I'd like to fix it myself.

You have to remove the chain sprocket that is attached to the end of the cam. With the engine in the car, you would need to drop the front of the engine (the part closest to the rear bumper) several inches, remove the muffler, remove the chain cover plate, etc etc. Then when you reinstall the sprocket and timing chain, you will need to time the cam, at least on that side. And then there is the potential for it to leak after the procedure.

Talking Thank SM

So Superman your saying it's about a 2 on the scale? Just kidding. I think I'll go ahead and fork over the $600. Thanks.

I would say it is an 7 on a scale of 10. Also requires some specific tool on your part: cam holding tool, a dial indicator, extension , and a holder.

I not necesary to drop partialy the engine. You can remove the muffler and the engine sheet metal and you will get acces to the camshaft housing cover. Remember to record the timming before you loose the cam nut and the set the cam to the timming that you record.

I was going to have this leak fix but after talking to the shop I decided to hold off for awhile. They told me it's no big deal right now and not to worry about it unless the car starts burning alot of oil. What do you guys think? Also it sounded like it was going to cost closer to $800 than $600.

Just did this a few months ago with Tim, not at all necessary to drop engine, even the front. Just yank muffler, tinware, and chain cover. You do need to time the bank that you fix after the repair though.

Took us about half a day to complete the repair. If you've not worked on and/or timed a 911 engine before it will take longer. The quote seems high - if I can do it in half a day, there's no reason why a shop couldn't have it done in an afternoon either (4 hours labor and a cheap seal =! $800)

What are the symptoms of the leaking cam seal? Where does the oil come out?

Regards,
