I live in Mexico City and I'm about to buy my dream an 1978-1980, 911SC to import it to Mexico.
I'm pretty sure that she will need an engine rebuild, so I would like to be prepared and have the job done before taking it to its new home. I have family living in LA (Alhambra), so I need information of an rebuilding shop in the area, because in here is too tough to find a shop or parts. I can't spent to much time in LA for doing myself the rebuilding job with Wayne's book. and buy part on the INTERNET because the taxes are too much. in the other hand I cant afford $23,900 USD in the rebuilding. So I need to find a nice and not expensive shop. Thank you very much for your time and answers. Good luck everybody.

About 5hrs north from LA is Competition Engineering. Definately one of the best 911 rebuilders in the US with the reputaton to prove it. I'd call Walt just to see what the story is.

Photogil,
Alhambra! Nice town, I grew up there. As far as rebuilding shop, try TRE. They are located in N. Hollywood, about a 20 minute drive from Alhambra. Do a search on this website, TRE has an outstanding reputation. Phatnine11 |

Welcome to the Forum.
![]() There is no shortage of competent, honest and talented builders in the LA area. There are also some motor shysters. I would talk to John at Ottos and Dave at TRE - good guys and will point you in the right direction. You will want to make sure you have covered all your bases and have the SC thoroughly broken in and all the issues solved. Half way to Mexico City is not the time to discover an oil leak. Do you have a car yet? If not, you are going to want a very detailed PPI. You dont want a fixer-upper but a nicely preserved, maintained and updated 911SC. You can then set about completing the details. Is isnt economical to rebuild one from scratch. There are also other issues than just the engine. Since you have family here is it possible to maintain US registration? That might save you a bundle. Can you have access to a truck or shipping container? That might be a solution for returning to SD or LA for major service and repairs. ![]() Again, welcome. Best, Grady ![]() |

Photogil,
You can ask ONE of the moderators by PM listed below to combine your two threads. This is a common rookie mistake and easily fixed. Dont worry about it. Noah or Jack Olson or Bill Verburg Your two threads are: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?threadid=300184 and Hi Im new here and need some help in finding a shop for an engine rebuild. Best, Grady

I don't believe CE does the complete rebuild, just the machining. There are a lot of rebuilders in SoCal. Calling anyone of them "not expensive" would be to error on the side of ignorance. The price is going to be dependent on what the engine needs and what it doesn't need. Sound ot me like some testing and analysis is in order before tearing the thing down and throwing new parts/money at it.
Don't read the ads in the Porsche books about a certain Downey based rebuilder who says he can do it cheaper. Welcome to the bbs. Be patient and wait out this thread to get names of 3-4 shops. Interview them for your purposes. From what I hear, and I'm around here and the drivers quite a bit, most shops are about the same on the honor level. Some don't post here and some do. Obviously, the ones that post here get more attention. And, a couple of shop owners I have encountered have an ego bigger than a 3.8. That don't fly with me. You may have another feeling about same. |

Henry Schmidt at Supertec in Fallbrook, CA. Excellent work at very competitive prices. Henry also has an extensive stock of used and new
parts which your project may require. 760-728-3062. |

Welcome to the forum. If I were looking for a car in that range of years, I would be patient and look for a car that wouldn't need a rebuild - assuming you haven't already committed to buying a specific car. Good cars with reasonably fresh engines are available if you can take some time to look, along with getting a PrePurchase Inspection by a reputable shop. That way you could save the cost of an immediate rebuild (which will add a lot to the initial cost of the car). You could drive it for a number of years & have time to locate somebody to eventually work on the car when it needs it.
Good luck.

Thanks everybody for your time and helping me in this issue, it beeing very useful for me.
In fact I havent bought the car because unfortunately after beeing saving money for a while, I had some problems here in home with the kitchen and had to rebuild it entirely (doble WOW, thats expensive). So took the money but Im back in busines and saving for that car again. I found this place, midwestperformancecars.com in Chicago with very nice looking cars. Could be a good option? This a bout that Im going to spent my money in one of my dreams since I was a little child, so I dont want this became my worst nightmare and the biggest mistake of my life. thats why Im trying to learn as much as a can, so I can have a car which I can enjoy it every day I spend with it. Thanks again, cya soon. Im checking all the info in theese posts.

Souk might know of them
Supertec/Rothsport(Steve Weiner)/TRE are all ultra-top-notch places for a rebuild If you have to ship the motor, I would not take any chances. You are at a labor rate disadvantage - you live in an are with lower rates than the US but are paying US rates for the rebuild if you ship it. It's too bad there isn't a great rebuild place in Mexico City -- or maybe there is (?) If you can find one, it should be much cheaper that shipping + higher rates in the US. Just be really careful.

Supertec is not the only shop but for my money , they are the best.
I chose Supertec and more specifically Henry after interviewing a lot of shops. They offer a great warranty and Henry seemed to be more knowledgeable than any of the owners I spoke with. Funny thing is that even other shop owners speak highly of him.. I talked to some shop owners who said they call him for both advise and specialty parts. My baby 3.5 turbo 327 RWHP and it took 34 days from start to finish. I think he may be too busy for that turn around today. ![]() Last edited by Turbo_pro; 08-30-2006 at 09:35 PM.. |
