I just bought it. Looks like it'll be a fun project. A little beat up, but nothing I can't handle.

April Fool! And so is the craigslist ad, most likely?

Actually, I can't believe nobody recognized the description. I was posting just a couple of weeks ago about the abuse my poor SC has seen on Chicago's north side. I've finally decided to take Don (Ruf-Porsche)'s advice and get a house. Once I've got a garage to call my own, I'll return to Porsche ownership. The 928 will also be gone within a week, and after I've acquired a new daily driver I'm selling the 944 as well.

Souk, you were like the 37th person to reply to the ad (not counting the Nigerians), and I haven't gotten to all of the replies yet. There's a guy stopping by 1st thing tomorrow, and I'm thinking he'll show up cash in hand.

KTL's description is actually spot-on - a little beat-up, but definitely do-able by anyone with Wayne's book, a 10mm and 13mm wrench, and a garage; the car is seriously under-priced, but I wanted to pick the buyer and this way I get a selection. If anyone wants to do a drive-by look, the car is on the street: 3800 N Fremont, south of Irving Park, west of Broadway.

How much is the 928 going for?

I saw the SC that EP had when he first purchased it and it was a really nice SC in GUARD RED.

If it wasn't for the fact that my wife don't like me tinkering with project car (Made me sell back a project Targa to a dealer) I would have answered EP's ad.

Just do a Google Search on 500E and Porsche and you get the following

A few Porsche enthusiasts will remember the four door prototype, called the Type 989, that Porsche began developing in the early 1990s based on a stretched 911 chassis with a rear mounted 8-cylinder engine and four doors. The project was eventually shelved, but the 989 hardware was reverted back to a two door configuration and evolved into the Type 996 or 1999 911 that we see today. The foor door Porsche spirit lives on, however, in the form of another Stuttgart car.

In 1990, Mercedes decided to develop a high performance version of their successful 300E model which debuted in 1986. Porsche was contracted to engineer the modifications necessary to transform an ordinary 300E into the very special 500E. However, the extensive modifications to the floor and external sheetmetal meant the 500E could not easily be built on the normal assembly line at the busy Mercedes Sindelfingen plant. So, Mercedes also called upon Porsche to perform the assembly of the 500E at Porsche's Rossle-Bau plant in Zuffenhausen. The contract called for 8 to 12 500Es per day, 2400 per year, built to the highest quality.

It's not rocket science

There were some funny responses to the ad - quite a few Porsche owners e-mailed just to say they got a kick out of reading it, and almost everyone that responded knew Porsches well and got the 500E reference. One guy seemed a little put out that there was a quiz!

I should have posted pictures - several respondents seem to think the car is a LOT worse than it is. I took it to the car wash today and mentioned to a kid there with a nice '86 944 what I asked for it and he nearly fainted. I simply started with how much I paid 5 years ago, and subtracted what I felt a good paint job and the fixes would cost - I want the new owner to have plenty of money left over to throw at it. The poor thing saw some rough times with me, and deserves some pampering.

I'm kind of shocked at the response - I had no idea so many people browsed Craig's List. The only Pelican I knew that was pretty close is Ruf-Porsche and he's already got a nice Targa, so I didn't bother posting here - probably should've.

KTL - the 928 isn't taken yet. I washed it today and plan to take pics tomorrow. There's hardly any 928 activity here, so I was going to offer it on Rennlist for $4000 firm with the proviso it be gone by next Saturday. It's got a hand-sized crease on the drviers rear fender from a parking lot scuffle, it needs an O2 sensor counter reset (makes that annoying click) and I recommend doing the timing belt as it's 4 years old, but everything looks fine. PM me if you're interested. To everyone else - I'm giving KTL right of first refusal. If anyone else is interested, post saying so and I'll post pics on the for sale board tomorrow.

Oh, and this is annoying - ever since I decided to sell, the car has started on the first turn of the key! Before, it took 3 or 4 tries and then the idle would hunt.

Sure - depending on how my test drives go, that should be a week (I'm deciding between the C320 sport and a 330i). Bear in mind that the 944 is rough - faded paint, worn interior, 150k miles. It was my winter beater this year, but it's never let me down.

I like the way the seller wrote the ad, no bull, just a very frank description of the car and why he's selling it. I wish more sellers did that.
