What is the advantage of K & N's

I have the factory air filter set up on my 70T, and now have the opportunity to place the individual K & N set up with watersheilds.

My question is What is the advantages of changing to the K & N's on Zenith Carbs.

THanks

Shane

tagged. My 70T has the original intake system... I'm wondering how good the difference is, and if it's worth it.... and where can I get the K&N setup with the water guards and such? And how much do they cost??

Oh Nooooooooooo, not the dreaded debate again??? Keep K&N oiled and it will only let in larger particles until it reaches a saturation point and then it filters better than paper. Paper filters better than K&N at start and degrades over time if not changed. Better airflow, more power. Did I remember these correctly????

And as we all know, The SC is the pinnacle of Porsche Engineering!!

Shane, I don't get that you're trying to do a K&N vs. Paper filter thread... You're asking about the dual filters directly on the carb setup vs. the original stock 'bladder' deal with the cylinder type paper filter.

Maybe the dual filter setup (K&N or not) could flow more air than the big bladder deal??

THAT is what I want to know. I already know the deal with K&N filters... it's a dead horse that has been beaten to death.

The K&N set up with watersheilds will increase intake noise in a positive way. No more power though unless the motor is heavily moded and needs more air.

It has also been said that the factory air cleaner has some positive tuning effect on the mid to high end power of the smaller- 2.0 to 2.4- engines; lost when the K&Ns are installed.

I have not yet seen the dyno charts that support this, to be fair and balanced...;-)

Pro's = Lighter Wallet and you "feel" like you did an upgrade to the Porsche Machine

Con's = No one will ever belive you were capable of such a chalenging upgrade to your German machine.

This came up earlier this year on the Early S website and I did some dyno testing to try to get a definitive answer. The results were that on my 2.2S motor the factory intake system made more power from 3,200 rpm - 6,600 rpm than the K&N filters. At higher and lower RPM's the K&N's were better. There does seem to be evidence to support the argument the stock intake is resonance tuned to stregthen the midrange. That being said, I still run the K&N's because I think the inprovement in sound outweighs the slight loss of power.

Check out the thread for full discussion and dyno charts. Also tested sport vs. stock mufflers while I was at it.
