8+ liters from my sump? WTF???
 

Car hasn't been run in about 2 months.

Went to do an oil change. Got the sump plug out, the tank plug is still stuck. (different thread)

Anyhow, I've left the plug out for the last week with the drain pan underneath. As I couldn't get the tank plug off, I wanted to see how much oil I had removed from the sump.

When I poured it into measurable containers, it comes out to over 8 liters. WTF??

Is this possible, given that it hasn't circulated in about 2 months, and I left it to drain for so long?

No comments please about draining it cold. (different thread again, with certain reasons.)

Could all of the oil have gotten down into the sump after this amount of time?

I have heard that this can happen if it sits a long time. I think someone here once said that if the oil pump is in a certain position when you shut her off, that the oil from the tank can more easily drain into the sump. Hence some bigass cold start clouds after a long sit.

when I drained the tank on mine after a week of the car just sitting on stands, not a whole lot came out. I thought I was really low on oil, until I drained the sump and a whole lot more came gushing out! I had well over a gallon in the sump alone... :o

I believe it's normal for a lot of the oil to drain back into the engine when it's not running. Nothing to worry about.

Been posted many times...for cars with front oil coolers, the total capacity is about 13 quarts. During a refill, you change out only about 9-10 qts..the rest stays behind ( yes !).

If engine was run...like getting oil warm before the change-out....typically 6 qts comes from the tank and 3-4 from the engine sump.

If engine had NOT been run in a long time....the reverse is true....6-7 from the engine sump since gravity...as we all know.... can't be turned off !!

And thus we have a partial reason for (some cases of) engine smoke on startup. True.

Another Pelican posted to allow you car to run at idle for a few seconds (I do about 10-20) to allow the oil to get back to the tank.

Works for me, I very rarely have any smoke on start up......
