I have not drive my -84 targa for about 12months due to getting the car repainted and it being garaged for winter. Now that I have it back on the road I noticed a kind of a whining noise at idle. The noise isn't really loud but noticeable. It stops as soon as I puch the clutch pedal in a little. Any advice; do I need to adjust the clutch cable and/or pedal?

Throw out bearing, but yes do adjust the cable first.

Throw out bearing - hmmm. That doesn't sound good. What's involved with fixing this? Lemme guess: pull motor, trans and do entire clutch job with new bearing. Geez, I was thinking about the next project. Hopefully it won't die before then 'cause I'm really looking forward to some DE's this year; as many as I can get away for.

Could also be that $1.98 pilot bearing... Check it out before it is too late! If you have tools, garage, manuals (or cat5 run to garage with laptop for easy access to PP BBS) and a weekend you're all set.

what's the penalty for letting this one go a while? I noticed mine whining within the last 6 mo's, however, the clutch doesn't slip on the standard hill tests etc... I have 137k on mine, and I don't believe the PO ever changed it out. I also have been noticing that the engagement gets a nice shudder when the engine is hot, (210) is that normal or is it going?? it's smooth the rest of the time, just shudders when hot and pulling away in first...
I'm moving/changing jobs, hopefully in the next few months, so should I just park it until I get where I'm going and can have a drop party? Or should I just keep driving the snot out of it until it really dies?

clutch
Wente, thanks for bringing the shudder issue up. My car also exhibits these issues during town driving when the clutch gets hot. I painfully aware of how much work it takes on a rebuild; nevertheless, I plan to tackle this myself. I only hope that the clutch will last until winter and not die during summer when the car is needed.
