WEVO or RENNSHIFT for 915
Opinions please on which shifter - WEVO or RENNSHIFT - is best suited for 915. Very hard backroad driving in 425HP 911 hot rod. Thanks - EP Slick

You are not going to get too many opinions on the current RennShift, as only a handful of the new version have been shipped.
I'll leave it at that for now. |

James, why don't you elaborate as to why the rennshift is going to be better.

20 or 33% throw reduction that the end user can change between at any time (20% is a great replacement for the Factory Short Shift that has become scarce). All new components in a complete shifter so you don't have to take your old housing apart and "build" it. Super quick installation. Left and right adjustable gate springs, automatic and manual reverse lockouts, and positive stops for solid shifting feel. Pelican will have them within a couple of months and will be about $500. I have had two complete WEVO systems in different cars and a third car with just a shifter installed.
While the WEVO is expensive it is one of the best improvments I have made to my 911s. Well worth the money IMO and a must do for any 915 car I drive. |

rdane,
I will have to tear down my 915 shortly to do a shift fork alignment. While I'm in there ... at any rate which of the wevo componets do you find most beneficial? Don't you have a 3.6 w/ a 7.31 r/p? I ask b/c if I invest all this money and time into my early gearbox and convert to a 3.6 I would like to be fairly certain that the 3.6 and a '74 915 gearbox will be happy together. I am thinking though that a 7.31 will be to short for the 3.6.

JMZ,
I had a 3.8 with a 915 (7:31) - awsome acceleration, but 1st was useless and I got tired of the high revs when cruising. For short tracks the car was a blast and the 7:31 is much more usable than the 8:31. I have now build a box with trick gears from GT, 1st will do 50+ mph and the car is a rocket - topend is poor but I can use all 5 gears on the tracks (short ones). I have the WEVO and am very happy. Bought the coupler as well and the shift is great. Installation is really easy, and it looks super too. BTW: The 915 will take some strain in the longer run but so far I only had problems with the spiggot shaft moving under hard accelleration. New bearing, seal and I'm running fine. Regards Tom

One of the cars is running a '95 3.6 with a older '72 gear box and a 8:31. No 7:31 here. The others are a '82 and has a short set of gears 3/4/5 and a stock set of gears in a '79 with a 8:31.
When I first talked with Hayden at WEVO I had just rebuilt my original box.. Hayden actually discouraged me buying his parts with all new shifter bushings just installed. A year later I took a ride and sat in one of Steve Weiner's 3.6 conversions at Portland. After watching Gamroth shift one of the 3.6s on the track and playing with the shifter in the parking lot I bought the shifter first. My thought was if these "make little" difference as Hayden had said I am buying the rest of the kit just from the feel of the shifter alone. I did the shifter and coupler first. Gate when I pulled the tranny again. Shifter gives the greatest improvement in feel, coupler second IMO and gate last. But the internal gate will reduce the wear on the tranny the most I suspect by design. (this compared to all new bushings and a factorty short shifter with a recently rebuilt tranny) My last 915 tranny being built now for a 300+ hp 3.6 also got the bearing retainer plate for the extra measure of security. It has a 8:31, ZF l/s, WEVO gate and a standard set of gears from '82. Should be just right for my use and that engine. The best 915 tranny I have driven has been a full WEVO set up and IMO as well as many who have driven my car think it rivals any G50 box set up. Money well spent on a 915 car I think.
