Replacing steel fuel line in tunnel - can it be done without pulling engine / tranny?

My '73 911 has a steel fuel line that is rusty at both ends, outside the tunnel. It'll leak sometime when I don't want it to - probably when the car is inside my attached garage.

I've asked about details on other forums and have only gotten a few responses. I'd like to pull the fuel tank and replace the line from the front (disconnect the rubber lines at front and rear, pull the line out from the front, then push the new line in from the front), but what appears to be the most knowledgeable response says that I'll need to pll the engine / tranny too.

Has anyone else done this job? Are there clips securing the line inside the tunnel? Were you able to do the work from the ront and leave the engine / tranny in place?

Thanks

Jim

Jim I recently finished cutting up a parts car - at least most of it - a fellow Pelican head needed about 3 feet of the tunnel. If I remember correctly the fuel line as well as the other hard (steel) lines in there brake lines, lines the e-brake cables run through, etc, were either tack welded in place or had a little metal tab on them that was tack welded. If I still have a picture of the cross section left I will post because there is a lot of 'stuff' in there -main battery cables + and - , throttle cable, shifter tube, etc. In my opinion you would have to be a very good magician to install without pulling the engine/tranny. Good luck.

Garage
Do a search.
A fellow Pelican did this about a year ago. I have the thread printed out at home.

I just ran new steel fuel lines across the bottom of the car, where they belong.
