Clearly written, and wrong in it's findings just the same.
Pushed beyond the limits of their knock sensor controls is just plain wrong. A knock sensor is given command priority, that is it's given precendence over other inputs including the chip held maps. Now, those $35.00 chips sold on eBay may include overrides on the knock sensor priority (assuming that's possible), but only a fool programs those, and a bigger fool buys them.:D Here's Turner Motorsports website for BMW engine chips by Jim Conforti. They're the best in the business for bimmers, for Motronics equipped engines. There's a rich body of knowledge out there written by Conforti over the last five to 8 yeaers, including vast amounts about what chips can and cannot do. The same information applies to well programmed Porsche chips. |
So how did Porsche bump up the3.2 HP from 1986 to 1987? Didn't they remap the chip?

Bruce Anderson once said all 3.2s were essentially the same HP and performance...regardless of HP claims.
Certainly the 84-85 ( 86?) cars were mapped for USA 87 octane fuel...whereas the later cars required higher octane ( 91?) and theoretically made more hp. Smart tuners today use the same principles in getting a smidge more hp or drivability....and it won't blow up our cars if done carefully and with discretion.... Wil |
Sure are lots of "modified" 911 3.2 Carrera's out there running god knows what chips from the late 80's and 90's with 100k-200k miles on them and they finally blow and get a rebuild...
So the engine blows up and I get a rebuild or a 3.6 - What am I missing? Uhhh so. Who cares. 10k? Big deal. Most people chipping their late model Carrera's have some disposable income and are looking for a reason to mod. Let's dig up all the thread from this board that relate to engine failures due to chipping them...How many you got? It's kinda like one day we all know we are going to die but between then and now I just want to pack in some living...I think a chip does just that. Next topic? (Yawn.......) |

Sure 45 or 50 degrees of timing sounds like a lot, but that only applies at WOT. During part throttle conditions, engines can handle much more timing than "what Porsche techs consider the maximum advance". So comparing max WOT is really more important. A decent rule of thumb is 1 degree per octane point, but as with most things, you will reach a point of diminishing returns... |

Compared to major engine mods, it's a good bang for your buck. However, too agressive a mapping may indeed produce harmful detonation in your engine, which will slowly hammer it apart from the inside out. I believe that there are some nominal gains to be made from a more agressive mapping of the chip, but not too much. Porsche designed the chips for all types of conditions. The fact that the 1984-89 Motronic system doesn't have a knock sensor means that there's room left on the table for some power gains - at the risk of causing detonation. Later versions of the Motronic system will run as advanced as possible (in general) until the sensor detects knocking. You could conceivably run a larger advance if you're going to be running 94 octane or higher all the time (or if you run twin plugs). -Wayne |
I really don't know if Jim Conforti developed Porsche Motronic chips for marketing by others
, but if he did, they'd likely be among the best. I don't dump chips, while I know what you mean, why waste your or my time? |

Having met Loren this weekend at the POC Tribute, I can say with 99.9% certainty that he is sitting back and laughing his !@# off at some of these posts.
He is a good guy, he's just having fun with some of you who take things a little too seriously. Hell, he got me in a pretty good lather a few months back as well when building my motor. It's just his way of having fun I guess. Why he wastes his time just stirring up trouble I don't know (or care for that matter), but some of you guys just routinely take the bait, over and over again. I really can't figure out though how he rationalizes that this can be good for his business. Ralph |
