What did guys do back in the 70's to modify their 911's?
Just curious as to what type of modifications were done to 911's back in the 70's. I am assumming there is stuff we can do today that wasn't available back then. Is that true? Like SSI's, did they have them in the 70's or did they come after? Not sure where I am going with this but thought I would ask.
Thanks, David |

I guess everyone who was into 911's back in the 70's were still recovering from the 60's to spend to much time worring about it.

Cams. I think you would be surprised how many people tried all sorts of different grinds, but I could be wrong. Webers/solex and jetting. Headers for sure.

They did a lot - a number of hot 2.8s (and other enlargements) were done in the 70s, different wheels/tires, seats, lightening, etc. etc. I think a bunch of the R Gruppe guys try to keep to vintage mods - ie, what was available back then. Some of them have some pretty tricked out rides.

Hopefully Grady will chime in. From what I recall of his postings, they did quite a bit of Hot-rodding in the 70's.

Black out any chrome.
Fit impact bumpers & rear reflector. Discard early recaros in favour of 'Tartan Highbacks'. Colour change from Signal Orange to Gold Metalic. Replace old blaupunkt radio with modern casette player, and hack trim accordingly to accomodate extra speakers.

David,
I think the ‘72T of Pelican rs911t says it all, done in about ‘74 and one of many. It is 2.8S, 10.5:1, 40IDA (converting to S MFI was cost prohibitive then.) Factory RSR Bilstein struts and shocks. Aluminum S brakes, 23 mm master cylinder. Torsion bars 22/28 mm, sway bars 20/16. Short gears, LSD. Factory ’72S front oil cooler. Steel wheels 6x15 with 22.5-7.5x15 Goodyear slicks. Six-point competition belts, 914-6GT steering wheel, 100W H1 headlights. Rubbermaid Solution. No stripes or decals, all original paint. Lots of laps. That 911 is still running fast laps on track today and the case has never been split. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. Back then we also would order up Factory new RSR engines and install them in “street” 911s. Best, Grady

Thanks Grady, very intersting stuff. What was the rubbermaid solution. Does the same apply to later 70's 911 with the CIS?

David,
The CIS engines became carbureted or MFI. The first set of 92 mm Mahle Nikasil we got was in late ’72 from Frau Bare. The 2.4 and 2.7 became 2.8. The 3.0 became 3.3 and 3.5. Before this generation the 2.0 became 2.5 with the Empi P&Cs. Here is the “Rubbermaid Solution”: Water vapor cooled 911 - the Rubbermaid Solution Best, Grady

Grady,
Not to resurrect the Rubbermaid Thread, but it would seem that compressed gas would provide a similar cooling effect as water vaporization. But my thought is that compressed gas is much lighter than a jug of water sloshing around on the front seat ad in fact much cooler. The beauty of the Rubbermaid Solution is that it is cheap backyard engineering with readily available parts. Almost more of a scientific endeavor than an actual practical solution. So it got me thinking..or maybe just blathering...why not something colder and lighter than water. By compressed gas, I'm simply refering to those containers of "dust-off" that can be used to clean computer keyboards, etc. I understand that a larger container would be necessary and there might be a flamability issue(although I don't really think so). This all starts to sound kinda like a Rube Goldberg contraption, but I'm thinking of a 3 pack of cans of air mounted rearward of the engine mounting bar and actuated by a solonoid trigger which sprays the cold air into the fan. I suppose it simply might have the effect of freezing the fan blades and nothing else. Any thoughts? I'm just rambling and hyjacking here...
