Am I crazy?
Here goes....my 83SC is leaking from the number 8 nose bearing. It is a constant drip and leaks about a quart in a half hour. I have been trying to solve this problem, but no luck so far. To properly fix this problem requires a teardown and $$$$. This is my weekend car and I cannot afford that. The engine runs strong, but I do not have a history on it from the PO. This leak began about a month ago.
Today I bought some Dow Corning 730 (recommended by Magic930Dow Corning 730 link to see if it is the elixer that I have sought. After cleaning, degreasing, and cleaning the area again, I put a thick bead on making sure the area was completely covered. I will wait until tomorrow after it cures to put it all back together. It completely cures in 7 days. If the Dow does not work, my next idea is to have the nose bearing welded. I know this is not the best long term solution, but I want to drive my car. I can start saving now for the new engine in a couple of years once this one is done. Am I crazy? Any other ideas? Thanks, David

Like everyone says......no matter what type of older car you are buying.....always make sure you have money left over after the purchase for a headstart on future maint. I learned my lesson after dropping $3K to get my rear wheel bearings and my brakes rebuilt. I wanted to drive the car so I got it fixed right.
My other suggestion would be to purchase both of Wayne's books, read them carefully once, twice and even three times and then make sure you have all the tools together, gather up a few of the pelicans from S. California and have an engine drop parts. Additional costs would be a case or two of beer and a few steaks (or pizza). Then spend a month or so rebuilding the engine yourself and solving the problem. Another case of beer and pizza will normally get the engine reinstalled. Just a thought. I would love to help you out but I am in Ohio. Sorry. Brian

I've been giving this a little thought lately as I may have a similar problem. Hopefully just a pulley seal, but if not....
What about finding an o-ring to fill the gap? Maybe two? at least something to slow the leak down enough to be liveable, you know, maybe carry around a pice of cardboard to soak up the couple of drips here and there, like a real Harley.... Something to keep the car alive until a rebuild. Welding may be a bit extreme, plus welding magneseum to steel?

As far as having a engine dropping party, that might be the best solution if the sealer does not take. I am kind of off my rocker though and my resort to extreme measures..... David....thanks gents...

That's kinda what I thought when I looked too, but I just had to replace an o-ring on one of my hot tub jets, and it had a very thin silicone o-ring on it. That's what got me thinking about it. Less than half the diameter of a typical o-ring propotionally. And stretched....?
I'll be very interesed to see if the DOW works, as I'm sure several will. Keep us posted. ![]()

The packaging of the Dow 730 said it takes 7 days to completely cure. I am going to reassemble it tomorrow or Wednesday, but not start it up until after it has cured. Since I just replaced the pulley seal, it was actually kind of easy to do the partial drop because I know what to loosen (again thanks to Wayne's books). After it cures, I'll post an update.

David,
70 miles and 2 quarts is a big leak. If I were you, and I am not, I would do the rebuild myself. Even if your labor is free, you can expect to spend $4-$5k on this. Good luck man.

David - aren't you a DI?
You have to break the [] all the way down before you can build it back up the "right" way.... Well, I can't see that it will hurt to try. I just wouldn't get my hopes up.

I put the car back together but have not started it up yet. The Dow sealer said it was fully cured after 7 days. That would put it at Tuesday (March 22). I must admit that it is taking every ounce of restraint to start it up and see if it leaks, but I want to make sure I do it right so I can report back objective results. My job will keep me from starting the car until Wednesday (March 23) so I'll post results then.
Also, what temperature does the 3.0 case get to? I know the internal oil temperature based on the oil temp gauge, but I am interested in the magnesium near the pulley. The Dow sealer is rated at 500 degress Farenheit, and I know the 3.0 does not even come close. If this one does not work, there is another product called "Pro Seal" that looks promising as well. I'll report back, David

I just got home from working a double shift. We had a double murder with 3 others shot, a pursuit, and a barricaded suspect. Not to mention 3 other seperate shootings, robberies, a rape, and a kidnapping! Man, we live in a crazy world....All night long, all I could think about was starting my car to see if I solved the leak! Unfortunately, everyone is asleep right now, and starting the car will wake everyone up and put me in the doghouse. I am going to grab some sleep and report back later today.
David

Was the leak from the bearing itself or the o-ring around the bearing assembly?
