964 rear window seal in a 911:

Does anyone have direct experience w/ using the 964 rear window seal, w/o the metal trim, in an '89 or older 911? There is some concern from my supplier, (which is of course our host), that there might be fit issues due to a subtle difference in glass thickness or something(?)

Anyone actually done this switch? TIA.

My brother installed a 964 rear window in a 88 coupe. He used the 89 and newer rubber trim and it went in great.

Thanks, but has anyone used the 964 rubber w/ a 911 rear window? ('89-down). From what I heard, the glass might be a slightly different thickness, so the above example wouldn't answer my question.

I did. Not good. To be clear: 911 ('76) rear window in a '76 car with a 964 seal. The window is too small and wiggles around. Lots of work to make it fit correctly, I basically glued a strip of plastic on the edge of the window all around.
964 window with 964 seal works a treat in an early shell.

I replaced the Front Windsheild in my 87 Carrera with 964 windshield and seal, rear is same deal late model glass and seal in early cars works just fine! Early glass with later seal is a no go, glass changed significantly with the new seal

The newer rubber seal is one piece and does not require (or allow) the use of the trim strips that are inserted into the rubber. It has a lower profile and possibley less drag!? Less wind noise?
It looks cooler!
As long as you want a black window surround.

I'm told it seals better too--as in it (the gasket) actually seems to have been designed for the vehicle it goes on. Cal look rubber is cool. There is actually a built in insert of sorts, but you don't have to fuss with it as you do with the aluminum trim.

Tell them 1992 C2 and you should be fine.

I have done this upgrade a few times on early cars since the newer style rubber came out and worked out well for me.

I have an 89 carrera, which used 964 glass and seals on the windshield, rear windshield, and rear quarters. No problems to date, and it looks better.

For the 'trimless' look, you can do 964 glass and seals front and rear, and 993 seals for the quarter windows.
