Jim and I have been discussing this over email. I think this car was tremendously overpriced. Heck, you can buy a 906 for $100K more, and that's a far more valuable car. 1500+ RSs made in 1973, that's too many to call them "rare".

Although in the post that started this thread in April 2005, you said:

"There have been several at recent auctions that have sold in the $85K-$95K range. If you read SCM, it's all documented in there. Buyer beware - I believe that people are vastly overpaying for some less-pristine examples these days...

$97K at the super-wild Barrett-Jackson auction this year..."

3 years later, those who "vastly overpaid" for their RS are sitting pretty!

that's how the market goes...back when 300SL Roadsters were $200k and now they're $750k. A Ferrari 275 GTB/4 sold for $2,059,000 this Saturday (the 18th of May), and that would have been a $600k car in 2005. Or the Miura SV, which was ~$400k then and is now in the $1-1.2 million range.
Someone in the SCM fold always says "you can never pay too much, just buy too early"

That $462k RS sure makes "our" car look like a good deal at $345k:

1973 Porsche Carrera RS Touring

Jim Schrager takes a look at a 1973 Porsche Carrera RS Touring that sold at $425,575 at the Bonhams Retromobile sale on February 9.

In addition, the article points out that the car had been in the same family for 34 years. It has a complete and significant competition history file which contains event and restoration photos as well as period rally plates. It was one of the most successful of all privately entered Carrera RS rally cars from the 1970s.

This car was clearly a special one.

A Comp was shown (#9113600866) that sold for $271,000 in Carmel, CA last August (2007).

The story immediately following the Carrera RS article titled "The Time-Traveling Investor" explained how hard it is to actually make a profit from several Porsches (21) pulled out of the ad section of the San Diego paper from 1977.

His advice: "Or better yet, invest in financial instruments and enjoy your Porsches....as cars".

Sports Car Market magazine is worth the annual subscription price just to read Jim Schrager's articles.

Oh boy that is a real stretch IMHO. This must be a 'tongue in cheek' comment. I have to agree somewhat with Wayne's valuation comment above. Both seem overvalued to me at this point. If your Beige-gray color change car does sell for the asking let me know and I will certainly eat my words in public.:D

You could buy these all day long in '03 for less than 100K. Seems to me to have been a good investment to hold on to one.

time will tell...i was surprised at first when the owner told me where he wanted to price the car, but we've already had some interest in the $300k neighborhood.

Good for you guys.:)

Looks I may need some salsa to make the 'words' go down better. I will say the first time I saw this car a couple of years ago I was surprised how good BG looks on an RS. I'm not so sure about covering up Tangerine to do it but what the heck it's only paint right?:D

well, if i've learned anything from this industry, it's that interested does not equal selling the car. depends a lot on how flexible the owner is as well. this one is a very good car and yes, the color is actually really great looking on this car. it was white before at least, and not tangerine. it's only been in the states for a couple years, and is matching numbers too.

This RS (0059) was originally Tangerine before the color change. The code for Tangerine is 018. Grand Prix white is 908.

Right you are. And here I was listening to what people told me.

RWebb 05-26-2008 12:48 PM

screws on the paint plate??

must have been removed for the color change, eh?

Mark020 07-07-2008 01:04 AM

Saw an ad of Historika (www.historika.com but ad is not on site) that they have RS engine #6631287 for sale. No affilliation but thought someone might be interested!

Ok, it's been 4 years since the last update on this thread. In light of the recent auction results I think it would be fun to take a "trip down memory lane" and revisit our past predictions and how they played out.

I'm frankly surprised that the overall collector market, and these cars in particular, have continued to appreciate and prices are especially strong right now. Thoughts? Anyone want to fess up on how far off their predictions have been?

carreraplanes 08-20-2012 05:16 PM

Well I thought that the trend has continued upwards generally. It seemed that there were not a lot of RSs around much under £200,000 asking price until I noticed this acturial car:

Results For Sale , | Artcurial | Briest - Poulain - F. Tajan

check lot no. 140 136k euros. Seems cheap do we know anything about this car?

carreraplanes 08-20-2012 05:19 PM

link doesn't work very well check 7th july 2012 sale lot 140

I agree with many of your observations. The incredibly irresponsible actions of our Federal Reserve, the housing bust, along with a consumer recession will lead to much lower equity prices in '08. As a result Collector car prices will retreat from these levels, IMHO. Although I do wonder if Europe, Asia and Australia will suffer the same economic pull back as the US? I also think the $ will continue to be very weak so these factors may continue to hold up classic sports car prices a while longer. It will be interesting to watch it continue to play out.

Hi Jeff,
You like to keep this thread alive don't you.;)

Actually I found it interesting to re-read back a few pages. I wrote the above in '07. I figured the markets would tank sometime in '08 as the credit bubble burst. The collector car market did pull back as expected after that. I sure have been surprised though that it didn't pull back more and also I have been surprised to some degree by the rebound back to the current level.

Based on the results in Monterey the market is still moving up, especially fir the best cars. I suspect hard asset speculation will continue based on the continued irresponsibility of the Central Banks to print money ( the ECB will most likely buy bonds to save the Euro soon).:(

Well, not to liken this theory to Wayne's housing bubble theory, but even though he may be right on both accounts, they could just as easily continue to go up for a couple of years...)
This is the most interesting post I think I've seen on here....... :)

Yeah, every 4 years whether we need to or not! I'm just glad my aging brain still remembers it.

Hagerty Insurance has an interesting charting capability on their website for car valuations over time. It goes back 5 or 6 years and charts the pricing from then to present based on the car model entered. It seems to be pretty accurate for the RS based on recent sales. I found it instructive. Most 911 models can be entered (T, E, S, RS Touring, RS Sport, etc.). Models up to 1994 can be entered. I tried the 73 911S and the pricing came up below where the market seems to be now. YMMV.
