Current California smog exemptions HELP!!

Hi guysl It's been a while since I lived in Cali,, I am in Florida thinking about coming back to San Diego; I have a 1978 SC and I can't seem to find a straight answer on what the smog exemption rules are for old classics; Anyone in Cali that has a clear legal answer please let me know, TIA

1975 or earlier are exempt, your 1978 will need to be smogged. There have been some threads on registering it as a collector car which need not be smogged, but it seems rather a long shot - maybe someone will chime in on whether that is still possible and if anyone has successfully done so.

unless you have a smog tech in your back pocket or an address way out in the sticks, you're going to have to smog the SC.

any model year '76 and newer is subject to smog tests every 2 years...

@Norm, btw Californians call it “Cal” (i.e. NorCal, SoCal, etc...) not “Cali”. Hope you get your CA DMV smog requirement sorted out soon. And welcome back to the “Left Coast”. Bem vindo de volta

I researched this issue before bringing in a 1988 911 I bought from a seller in Georgia. Your car will need to meet the emissions limits that the California Air Resources Board established for the MY 1978 911 SC which can be found here.

https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/classic//msprog/onroad/cert/pcldtmdv/1978/porsche_pc_a0190013r1_3d0_ta0.pdf

There is also a visual aspect of the inspection so it’s important to have the correct original ( or approved aftermarket) emissions control parts.

@Norm, Please verify with the CA DMV if this can apply to your situation while your 911 is in FL.

I recently got out of California after living there for two decades. I bought my 76 there and brought it back with me to Arizona.

I had to smog my car and I don't know of any exemptions. 1975 was the last year of smog exempt so I think you are stuck.

good luck

If your car was not originally a California car and you move to California, does the smog equipment need to be added, or just maintain what emissions equipment was originally installed?

Or, register the car in a boon-dog county where they don't require smog check, ever.

It used to be a rolling 30 year exemption. You can thank Sheila Keihl the lesbian gf from Dobie Gillis and Governator repealing that.

Pretty hypocritical coming from a guy that owned a Hummer with Oregon plates because it was illegal in CA.

If the car is North American spec also known as "Federal" certified it does not need to be converted to California emission when being brought into California. But it does however have to meet California tailpipe emissions if the vehicle is 1976 or newer. There will also be a visual inspection to check for modified/missing/defective emission equipment. This process of emission testing or "Smog Check" has to be done every two years.

Actually Shiela still drives her 1961 356 Cab that she bought new.
As for the "rolling 30 year exemption", I believe it was talked about, but never actually happened.

I was living in the state when the bill was proposed. It wasn’t the first time from various authors. Always vetoed or voted down in the senate. The biggest issue is the fact that early smog equipment were one or two year implementations and 76 and smog equipped vehicles to have oem devices that are no longer made. Junk yards have run out of used equipment. CARB in its infinite wisdom mandates oem replacement. There are some loopholes but few and far between.

Since I no longer live in CA and I retired as a air pollution specialist. I don’t keep up with the situation but I do know what happened when the repeal happened. It was discussed on this board in depth.

When there are no replacements to be found, isn't smog supposed to be waivable ?

Lots of hoops to jump thru and IF the parts are available are very expensive. An associate of mine spent close to three thousand chasing parts that were in most cases worse than what he had. For a 76 914.

But you’re missing my point. If it wasn’t for Arnold and that twit senator cars up to 1990 would be exempt.
