CV Joint Question

Looks like I need to replace the seal on on the left rear side of the tranny. I was reading the Bentley book and am a little confused. The book gives torque settings for (3) bolts the M8, M10 and the flange bolt. Looking at the description on taking it apart I should have (2) bolts to worry about unless they are giving a setting for the M8's used to counter hold the flange while removing the flange bolt.

Is that the case or am I missing something?

i would suspect your 79 has the 8mm allen head bolts. setting the emergency brake will keep the axle from spinning when tightening and loosening. they thread right into the flange out of the tranny.

it helps to have someone to set and release the parking brake as you rotate to access the bolts while you are under the car

Just reconnected my axles this morning... there's 6 bolts that connects the inner CV joint to the transmission. I used a 8mm allen key for these allen head bolts. The torque for mine is 60 ft-lb/83 Nm. I believe these are M10 bolts though.

i only encountered the 8mm allen head. i think the 10 may refernce the 8 sided star type. the trade name is torques i think?? you can look under the car and prolly see the one you need.

Porsche Crest

SCs have six M8 Allen bolts that use either a 6 mm Allen drive, or 12-point Polygon drive bit. It is the '69 thru mid-75 models that use 4 ea M10 bolts and two Spiroloc pins per CV joint.

Don't use the 60 lb-ft torque on M8 SC bolts ...or you will break [beyond yield spec] them!!!
