1969 912 Turbo Project Update.

Well, it has been almost a year since it was put on the rotisserie and although it looks a bit different now, it is finally rolling again!!!

Here is a quick update of the progress so far on my 912 Type-4 Turbo Project. My plan is to have it running by this summer before the little one (my first son) comes along. Many thanks to friends who has helped me sort out the suspension details and get my motivation going again.

915 Transmission Rebuild (Thanks Hayden @ WEVO). I am also getting a one piece bearing retainer, WEVO gate-shift, and 1st gear assymetrical update:

Here are all the gold zinc plated parts:

I have been waiting for a good day to take some pictures of the powdercoated parts in the sun, but it has been overcast. The color is called steel grey metallic and has a clear coat on it:

'87 Carrera Front Suspension powdercoated and installed with Mueller Designwerks rollerbearing set-up. I still need to rebuild the brakes:

'87 Carrera Rear Suspension with Smart Racing mono-balls and WEVO bits:

Finally Outside to see the light. Body panels will go on this weekend.

Powdercoated Gas Tank.

Now to get all the engine stuff sorted out. Turbo goes on next.

-Britain

That looks great Britain, I might want a suspension like that for mine, could you give us more details on what was done?
BTW, I'm in SF, car is in Mt Tam, maybe you could grace me with your presence someday to take a look at my project!

Looking VERY nice! I went to your site and was checking out your pictures. Very nice work! I only hope my 911 will end up going the direction yours is!

(also looking around on your site... I see you proposed to your lovely wife at Green Pastures here in Austin. One of my friends got married there a few years ago. I also noticed your longhorn sticker on your 914. Y'all should come on back to Texas! )

You thinking of turbo charging that type-4 in the 912E? That is basically what I am doing, expect the motor has Carrillo rods, aluminum cylinders, SCAT forged counterweighted crank, 911 style cooling, thermal coatings through-out, and is controlled by Electromotive TEC-3. It isn't completed yet, but I will let you know when it runs...I am hoping for over 300hp.

More update pictures:

I also installed a set of Mueller's rollerbearings. Only need a little phone support from Mike the owner (Thanks Mike)

Here are the rear control arms with the bearings installed (don't tell the wife I had them in the oven). I also installed the mono-balls from Smart Racing and starting putting the e-brake assembly back together:

How is this for the ultimate pedal assembly? Bronze bushings, powdercoated, and zinc plated. Looks awesome:

Here is the money shot, I think the color looks awesome:

Next steps:
1. Install the suspension.
2. Plumb up the brakes.
3. Finish the turbo piping
4. Get it together!!

The suspension is from an '87 Carrera front and rear with expection of the steel crossmember (several reasons I kept it). I powdercoated all of the the parts, installed rollerbearings all around, and cleaned up all the parts. I would love you check out your project...you are welcome to swing by south bay and check out mine. I will be installing all the bodywork this weekend and running the fuel lines. It will be going to LA next week to get the intake and exhaust systems fabbed up for the turbo.

Yea, we miss Texas. We both went to grad school at UT and moved out here 2 years ago. It looks like I will be moving to Oregon before the end of the year. I don't miss the hot Texas summers though.

No the 912e will be stock or somewhat as the tuner found a way to get some decent HP from some simple tweaks...

I was thinking of getting a 911 Turbo cab roller and putting a type 4 turbo in that...I have been wanting to this for a couple of years now...of course its a bastard car but who cares...

I emailed you a couple of days ago on info on your engine....if you can pm more in depth details and costs so far I would be thankfull

Britain, I was almost going to go up to Oregon this coming weekend for a visit. My aunt moved up there from San Bernardino (she and my mother were raised there).

You're missing some excellent weather here right now... sunny... high around 80... I just wish my Porsche were running, so I could go cruise through some hill country! Probably next weekend when I get her fixed.

Keep up the good work on that car! It's looking great so far! I can't wait to see the finished results.

It was a busy weekend, but the car is now ready to take to LA and get fitted for the custom turbo header, intake system, and intercooler. I was able to get all the 3/8" stainless steel fuel lines ran through the car and I hung all the body panels and installed the Koni adjustables. It is getting there.

Definitely the one thing I miss about Texas - all the beautiful women (and Shiner Bock Beer), but definitely the women. Hard to walk around the state with your mouth closed.

Britain,

Looks great! Can I offer a couple of suggestions, FWIW? You might consider some kind of insulating material on the fuel lines where they exit the tunnel- there's a lot of heat from the engine back there. I used orange firebraid which will help keep the temps down.

Do you really want to get under there to service the fuel filter? Also, what kind of vibration isolation is there on the hardlines? I would be concerned about them cracking at the bends, where you can't see them under the car. You could switch to AN-6 after the hardline exits the tunnel and keep the same standoffs, then relocate the filter up by the fuel pump. This would also reduce the number of junctions, which is key to reducing the number of leaks. I'd consider running AN-6 all the way to the fuel rail and back for that very reason.

Your attention to detail and workmanship are outstanding!
