Cert of Auth and Paint Codes

In November, I bought my first Porsche. Its a 1978 911 SC coupe (RoW)...Talbot Yellow. It has three layers of paint on it and the the bottom color, while yellow it is much lighter than the top two layers. I noticed this during the PPI and was actually happy that it was originally a less common color than the Talbot Yellow. I suspect Rally Yellow.

The Paint code plate is badly scratched to the point that I can make out a 1 and a 0 but little else. I've found L106=Talbot yellow and L10A=Rally Yellow.

I ordered a Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche and knew that among other things it would tell me what the original color and paint code was.

The COA arrived yesterday. Original exterior color - Talbot Yellow, Paint code - B7B7. I shot off an e-mail to Barbra Kurz, the Cert lady, and she wrote back stating that there was no mistake.

So, I have two mysteries.

1. I can't find B7B7 paint code listed anywhere other then the Certificate of Authenticity.

2. I can't explain the lighter yellow bottom layer. Its the only layer of paint under the trunk liner and on the interior floor sound barrier and under the engine sound pad so I don't think it has been taken down to bare metal.

Any ideas or suggestions to help in my search for truth would be wonderful.

Glenn

I had a similar situation with my car (80 SC): door jam shows "655" but the certificate of authenticity shows X6X6.

I never have been able to figure that out... but you can't go wrong with what's shown in the door jam (-assuming it's the original color, of course!).

so the factory uses a diferent set of paint codes in the "letter, number. letter, number" format. Thats fine. As you can see for the photo, the paint code plate is a bit torn up. I can make out a "10" then an unknown number/letter followed by "-9-2"

Anybody know what the "9-2" means? Also any chance the paint color/shade changed over the years but not the name?

If you pull the alum plate you may see the numbers from the back side? and you can see what color is under the plate.

Hmmm... looks like it could be:
110-9-2 or
010-9-2 or maybe even just 0 - 9 - 2 ? I wonder if it might be only 3 digits and the rest is random impressioning/scratching...?

I'll be over at the body shop later this week (once my car is coner-balanced it has to go back to the body shop for minor details like bumper fitment, spoiler lip attachment et. al.) so I'll see what they bring up with those codes/[code fragments?] on their "paint computer" that associates the various paint numbers with the related paint name.

Hopefully we won't see something like:
110-9-2 Electric Green
010-9-2 Guards Red
092 Purple
