"Allow myself to introduce, myself" Scruffy Returns!

ok, so those of you who know me might have noticed I have not been as active on the BBS since moving to Indiana. Part of that is due to a new job, part because I am getting married this fall and the rest is because I have been working on Scruffy.

When Tyson and I made our trade last year I knew one of the things I wanted to do was paint the car. But I didn't think I could swing it cash wise in a year involving moving, marriage, etc.

Here in Evansville it is hotrod country. On a weekend like this one, you can see a broad range of old school rides. In short, people here love cars. So I asked around about who was the best paint man in town.

This resulted in my finding Bartley's paint and body. Now, I know most everyone on this BBS will not have heard of these fellas but I had to mention them because as you can see in these pics they did a killer job.

The color is a combination of a 50's Porsche color and a darker 60's one. I didn't find one standard color which I was happy with so I made this one. I really like it.

I think it sets off the lines of a unique Rgruppe 911. The best of old and new IMHO. With the long lines we all love and the (soon to be) the modern drive train to boot.

I had planned to suprise Tyson, Jack, Dave& Joe when I showed up in LA with Scruffy's new look. But as the time for that trip kept getting pushed back and with the Rgruppe gathering coming on I just HAD to post these pics!

Next I plan to add back the s deco kit and do some of the details such as lug nuts, etc. A had an electrical short which damaged the rear wing wiring so if you notice the wing partically deployed that is why. Trust me, that the most frantic 30 seconds of my life getting those flames out!

I also added r taillights. I plan on putting the porsche script back on the decklid soon.

I also plan to return the interior to early car style with the exception of my 964 RS seats which I won't be parted with. (one request of the Mrs.)

where it started from (paint wise)

These pics can't totally do her justice fellas, I hope you LA area guys will come out for a canyon run when I am out there in a few months for the 3.6 install.

BEE-YOOOO-TEE-FUL!!! Like the single wiper setup, btw!

mjshira 04-16-2005 07:43 AM

thanks David. Tyson did that little trick, I love it. I'd be out driving now but the starter is toast and the UPS truck is not here yet.

speedracer 04-16-2005 07:43 AM

Wow she looks killer, Kevin

Kurt B 04-16-2005 08:17 AM

Holy Smokes!

That is one of the sweetest early cars I've ever seen. The color is gorgeous, the rims look great--unbelievable.
The cab top look hella sweet & so does the 964 decklid.

Wow...I have a new fav for my top 5--it's almost up there with that Orange early car you see pictures of every now and again.

mjshira 04-16-2005 08:27 AM

Thanks Kurt and Kevin.

Tyson Schmidt 04-16-2005 08:49 AM

DuuuuuuuuDe! Nice!!!!!!!

Too cool!!!!!!!

Awesome man! I can't believe you never spilled the beans even to me about this. What a surprise! Looks fantastic!

Now it just needs the "S" deco trim on the bumpers, and rocker panels. The wheels look great, what did you do to them, repolish?

W Scott Shores 04-16-2005 08:49 AM

Gorgeous! Great choice on the color.

mjshira 04-16-2005 08:59 AM

thanks Tyson. Nope, just some wheel cleaner and elbow grease like you suggested. It was been super hard not saying anything. they gave me such a deal (over the winter business for them is slow) that I had to do it. I thought we'd through the trim on in LA.

thanks Noah. I like it man. I always wanted an old school silver. (that not everyone had).

Thanks William, glad you like her.

Jim Garfield 04-16-2005 09:16 AM

Wow, that looks great!

Somehow that pulls it all together and gets the look that Porsche never managed to achieve (imo) with their 911 cabs. It looks just right. I have to admit that I was sceptical when I read about the trade as I have never been a fan of the cabs after the 356, but that car really does it.

Great job J.!

mjshira 04-16-2005 09:20 AM

thanks Jim, I appreciate it buddy. I had the vision thing going with this car. It turns heads anywhere I take. sadly, it also gets 5.0 attention as I have two tickets to show for it!

Jack Olsen 04-16-2005 09:31 AM

That looks awesome! I feel like a proud parent, since there are so many BB1 pieces on that car.

Great color.

Is Doc 'n' Cy's still in business in Indiana? They used to be a great source for repro trim pieces.

mjshira 04-16-2005 09:34 AM

thanks Jack. Yeah, BB1 is a big part of this car, as are you and Tyson. It is cool to have that history in mind each time I drive her. Not sure about Doc 'n' Cy's. I will check it out.

I need to get you to take some shot of scruffy in LA. I can't snap em like you.

Evans, Marv 04-16-2005 09:48 AM

James:
Love it !!! If I remember right, aren't you the guy who converted a (or some) 356's over to 6 cylinder? If it's you, I still have the article you send a long time ago - really enjoyed it. Again, what a beauty!

speeder 04-16-2005 09:52 AM

Looks fantastic, I always knew that car would take a paint job well. I particularly like the rear view, I don't always like the 911R type lights, but on your car it looks great. Is the color a metallic silver? Hard to tell on my monitor, but still it looks like you made the right choice on color. Congratulations!!
