Check out my new wheels and tires!
My Pelican Parts order came today, so I gotta show my a new look that finally came together!
My goal for my '74 911 is to create a vintage look with a unique, custom tweek... something just a bit different from all the other Porsches you see around Seattle... ![]() So for the '70s vintage wheels, fully polished and clear-coated, factory option ATS cookie cutters with satin polished lug nuts (from Pelican) and the original center caps. Tires are brand-new state-of-the-art 205/ZR55 Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions. ![]() ![]() I think drilled rotors are next on the menu... should look really cool through the cookie-cutters! The Fuchs that were on it are going to replace the "fake" Fuchs on my '74 914. Real Fuchs parked next to the "fake" ones in the garage just didn't cut it. I think it's cool that it now matches the cut-away drawing in the '74 brochure now... ![]() |

Thanks Tom! Cookie-cutters, you either love 'em or you hate them! I remember seeing them for the first time when I was a kid working at a gas station and thought they were funky-cool... like something outta Star Wars! The first Star Wars...

Darryl:
As I consider you one of the more inventive types on this board (blinking eyes, fan stickers, lift, et al), to see those cookie cutters look so good has inspired me to get mine chromed! My desktop is a cutaway of a 78 SC, and my real life SC still has chrome trim, so it's a natural. I wanted to do what you did, but the boys at the bike shop said they could have them chromed. My cookie cutters are really beat, finish wise, but real good structurally. Woud that be cool, or too over the top? Remember the old hot rodders credo: "if it don't go, chrome it". Pat

They look gorgeous...be interested in how you got them polished so well. What was your technique? I've got cookies too and would love to get them that nice! M

I never thought much of the cookie cutter but this looks superior. I like your goal of "vintage with a tweek." You accomplished it.

I used to have a set of fully polished cookies and they got more comments than anything else I've had on the car (and that's gotta be like six or seven different sets of wheels!)

Did you use your lift to put on those wheels ? By chance did you hit the lottery and this is what you do to stay busy because I can't figure out how you find the time to do all the stuff you do! Yes I am jealous ! Also nice jeep pretty cool looking.

Should I have mine clear coated? I guess it's clear coat or polish regularly huh? Will they be susceptable to staining etc. if I don't clear coat? Should I do it just to protect them, or will regular polishing keep them in good shape? I would just hate to see peeling clear coat down the road.
Here's the caps I'm going to use. ![]()

Darryl,
Your car looks great! I like Fuchs the best, but I also like the cookie cutters and phone dials. On your car, the cookie cutters look especially nice and give an overall "vintage" look that I really like! Yoiu sure have a clean, pretty car!

Daryl, They look great...and I don't even usually like Cookies! I think those painted centercaps would look great though. Maybe someone can do a quicky Photoshop of your car with the caps paints just to take a "lookie-see"?

Hey THANKS for the positive feedback on my choices of wheel and finish!
The previous owner of these wheels had them professionally trued and refinished by a shop in Los Angeles. They were left in the wrapper and never put back on the car. I picked the set of 4 up on eBay for $510, which I considered a bargain considering the cost to have the wheels professionally restored must have been at least that amount. I'm not sure about chroming aluminum. I do know that once the annodized finish is removed from an aluminum wheel, it is very soft and and great deal of care must be taken to avoid gouging or marring it with the tire machine. If chrome is harder than the aluminum and it stays on well, I would think it's a good thing to do. I've found you must at least clear-coat aluminum or you'll scratch the hell out of it just washing the wheels with a soapy wash mit. The center caps are just polished originals, with the annodized finish sanded off first. I did that work myself when I refinished my original Fuchs. Last edited by DarrylD; 04-17-2005 at 09:57 AM.. |

People were posting a month or so ago that chroming a Fuchs reduced its strength... or maybe it was removal of chrome that did that. You could search up that thread and see if it might apply to yours.
The cookie cutters always remind me of the 5 star Ferrarri wheels - that's a good thing.

Darryl, Finally a good looking set of cookies. Looks good on your 74. It also looks like you have a lot of space in your wheelwells, why not lower the car a bit ? Very sharp package, Doug
