I stand by my original statement. |
What kind of gearbox do you have in that turbo look?I don't know if I missed it but I couldn't tell from your sig. If you are going to step it up to the HP of those other cars I hope you have something other than a 915 box in your car.

WRX 1:48.14 911 1:51.33 or 3.19 seconds quicker. It was my first time in the WRX on the track and it is still being run in (first 500 miles) so I am expected to shave about 2.5 seconds off that to save face at the next WRX sprint. |
As the proud owner of an 1982 sc, I should state for the record that a WRX would indeed thrash my sc, and it has nothing to do with who is at the wheel. 180 vs. 227 hp......there is no need for debate....WRX hands down. Its an ugly little japanese box, but its certainly a fast one....
This of course all misses the point.... |
....not to mention the fact that it looks like a tissue box, sounds like an angry sewing machine and uses leaf blower components to make the hamsters under the hood pedal faster.
A 911 is still more than the sum of it's parts. It is a work of art - carries all the mystique of yesteryear. And the Ladieeeezzz - well, they just melt at the sight don't they? It really doesn't matter what is faster or slower unless you are going to hit the track. Or carry kids in the back seat. Or go shopping. Or drive on a warm day. Or get broken stuff fixed. I will definately own another one some day. Probably a track prepped lightweight 993. |
I'd resist falling into the trap of keeping up with the Jones'. What's the point? Be happy with what you have or go ahead and sell your car and placate your insecurities by purchasing an environmentally-friendly car. Or buy it and keep the Turbo-look. That's cool.
Do you think you'll outcool your neighbor who has a CGT? How about a McClaren GT or a Dauer 962? Would a penile transpant suffice? :) No offense, Sherwood |

Errr.... that should have been "transplant".
What does my Freudian slip reveal? Pantyhose? Sherwood |
forget your engine - should be good for 245hp anyway with the right exhaust and induction kit -
what you should do is replace as many body panels as you can with the carbon fibre ones from GT Racing. Strip out all your comforts, carpets and change your seats. If done correctly to the extreme you should get your cars weight down to about 800kg - which is around 306bhp per tonne on what will be a SPECTACULARLY LIGHT AND NIMBLE MOTOR and which will still be simple and reliable and easy to keep at the peak of it's performance - You'll absolutely wipe the ferrari into oblivion. The entire handling, braking and acceleration of the car will be utterly transformed - an engine transplant is NOT going to achieve anything like the overall performance gains you can achieve by this method. |
Thanks for so many responses. Did I open a can of worms here?
My goal is to get max power. I am not in competition with my affluent neighbors. I just like the power......always have......I can't get enough acceleration. We're turning the '72 VW Bug into a stripped out street/drag car, (cheaper than a p-car.) My goal is to try to keep my '85 widebody because the car is in "like new shape" 69,000 mi and runs great. And I love the body of the G series turbos. So, again......upgrade the engine to 930 Turbo/ gear box..G50? 3.6 ? I am tempted at the prospects of supercharging the 3.2, but I would like to be able to reverse the process if need be. Or.....just search out a duplicate 930 in as pristine shape. Oh BTW.....I will only consider P car options........no other makes will be considered. The thread is about my Porsche. Although I do appreciate input. I must say I like the 3.6 the best. Which tranny is needed? And how reversible are we speaking of? To answer someother questions... I live in a really small almost unknown part of Brooklyn called Bergen Beach. The area is secluded and new arrivals buy old homes or two and knock them down and put up palaces. My real estate taxes have tripled in the last 10 years. We are surrounded by water on three sides and there is no thru traffic....it is as bucolic as one could find in Brooklyn. My small house has gone thru the roof in value in the last few years....which is good for me, being that I am now paying tuition for both my son and daughter to SVA in Manhattan. So having these affluent new comers is a trippled edged sword. My wife although not as young is still as beautiful as any of these guy's wives, mainly because she has been infected for the need for speed as well. Like I said in another post of passanger quotes, "I like to go sideways! Let's do it again!" She will get into the Porsche like a lab going bird huntng, I realize not the best analogy but it works. Thanks again for letting me take up your time. :D |

I wouldn't start carving up a beautiful 911. Why don't you just get a 28' Cigarette with 2 big blocks. That'll really rock your world. |

If you want a thrill test drive a STI. Yes I know they are butt ugly with that monster intake and wing, but they haul ass and corner like nobody's business. |
Catca, I'm thinking about heading that route with my 3.2. I'd like to keep it to bolt-on pieces (aside from the cams, which my wrench recommended. What are you seeing in terms of power, and shape of curves? The wrench said the 964 cams would flatten it out a lot.
Flynn, 245 hp from a 3.2 with breathing mods? Please elaborate. Thanks. |

Have you ever thought that your neighbors secretly lust for the M491 Porsche and are trying to outdo you?
TL Carreras are rare and collectible cars, but if it's performance you want, I would recommend pulling your current drivetrain and dropping in a 3.6 mated to a G50. That way, you can keep your 3.2 and 915 trannie in good shape and restore the car to stock if you sell it. Whatever you do, have fun! |

That said - you do have the suspension and brakes from the mac daddy 930. If I was in your shoes - I would rebore your 3.2 cylinders to 3.4 - go with some JE custom pistons with a 8:1 compression. Buy a turbo exhaust from Custom Billett. A nice fast spooling Garrett Turbo. Hot film AFM. and keep enough left over for a spare tranny. You can always buy a spare 3.2 engine to stick back in there, but you have the makings for a high hp engine now... |
I have not had my car on the dyno, so I am not going to guess at he HP figure and get flamed. It definetaly has more power and better throttle response than it had before I did the mods. When it comes on the cam it comes on a little harder and pulls nicely to 6k+. It is a modest power increase, not like I would expect from a 3.6 or a supercharged 3.2. To be honest, after 2 weeks it started to feel the same becuase you just get used to it. It is a lot of dough for a small iimprovement.
Chip +/- 275 SSI/sport muffler +/- 1200 cams/rockers +/- 700 Labour if you do not do it yourself??????? yikes. It is still a fraction of what I am going to spend on the 3.6 but it also only a fraction of the gains. Jeff |
im in northern indiana, if you have a stock wrx, call me, My sc loves a good race, Kevin

Quite honestly a nice turbo look car in pristine shape is worth something... Anything you do to it will make it worth less than it is now. I'd suggest you sell it outright and for very little extra money, buy a 993. Even better, add a 993 and keep your car ;-)
You can make the 993 lighter fairly easily too, make it a nice Carrera RS clone and put lighter seats... Pretty fast car as is... OR get a Twin turbo 993 - they're starting to get close to 60K lately... |
Wholeberg, Jeremy thanks for the input. I do like the 3.6 swap the most but find the thought of boost exciting.
I shall have to ponder this one. Thanks |
