901 trans + 87 trailing arms = ?X? axle
From what I understand, I'll have to pull out perfectly good bearings from 87 trailing arms and press in new bearings with early hubs to get these to work with a 69 901 trans.
Question: can I fit early, inboard CV joints to later axels instead? these are going into a complete suspension rebuild in the E including 26 bars, Bilstein HDs, adjustable springplates, Elephant Racing polybronze bearings and sway bars

Shaun, the 87's are six-bolt flanges. You have to replace the six-bolt flanges with four-bolt to match the four-bolt CV's for the 901 box. To pull the flange, you destroy the bearing.
Why not just get some arms from a '74? Up to mid-75 these use four-bolt flanges. I would NOT do a CV joint combo of six on one end and four on the other. Search here under "Lime Rock Thrash" for more fun.

I'm looking at the same issue - 78SC arms to a 70 901 box on '70 911. Will a six bolt cv work on the outer side and a four bolt on the 901 side. If so, what are the real issues? The six bolt is stronger for sure but the four bolt on the 901 box flange is the same as before so there is no net loss of strenght.???

a '70 trans will be a 911 type not a 901. The flanges are different (at least for some of the 901 transmissions).
I've posted several threads on this or related topics.... some give p/n's and info on CV joints; other relate to the different transmissions and what the drive axle flanges look like. Grady Clay posted on some of the trans. threads so that might help narrow down your search. It will be a lot easier to get the right setup than to custom make some sort of hybrid... One other tidbit: there are two different _length_ CV bolts that use the same thread pitch etc. So be careful. Good Luck
