'84 911 - Excellent Condition - Fair Price???
I just took a look at a '84 911 in very good condition (in this newbie's opinion). Both the interior and exterior are in excellent condition. Exterior color is Chiffon White and it has color matching wheels (8" in rear, 7" in front). Interior is light brown and shows very little wear at all. Mileage is 98K. No oil leaks and a recent leak down test showed all cylinders are with in factory tolerance. No oil leaks. Brakes have been recently redone. Has been very well maintained and all records are available. Original tools and manuals are also available.
I have the Aug 2003 Excellance issue that would put a 2004 market value on this car at $21,975. It is now 2005...any thoughts on what a current market value would be. Would mileage of 98k be consider low, average, high miles for this car? Thanks......... |

98k should be normal mileage for an '84. I think $21.9k is way high unless this car is just perfect and the engine had been recently freshened up. For that money you should be able to find a cream puff G50 Carrera.

Get a PPI. I am assuming the 7's and 8's are 15" wheels. $22k seems high for the car. I would guess somewhere between $16k and $19k tops. 98k is average miles at best. Low mile cars will be 20-60k. Just my .02. I just bought an 85 RoW with 102k for just over $15k and it is in near perfect condition inside and out. I have had one mechanical issue crop up but aside from that, no surprises. Again, get a PPI.

I just sold my brothers 84 Carrera for him. 65000 miles, black/tan, excellent condition. He was the original owner. Just completed new return tubes, new alternator, valve adjustment...$16700... no tail, 15" wheels-Bill

If you want to spend $21K on that car, hell I will sell you mine for $20K in better condition and with a rebuilt engine! Sounds more like a $15K car to me.

For $22k, I'll sell you one of the cleanest, best-sorted SC's you'll ever see. It even has a Carrera case, as it's one of the very last SC's they made in 1983.

For $21K, I sell you ....
Oh well, the point is well made already. It is way high. It probably is a $15K car. But, it depends on how bad you want it.

I agree with the others, too high. For 21-22K you should be able to get an 87-89 Carrera with the 'better' G-50 transmission, plus a few other changes. By the way, it probably has a Carrera tail not the Turbo tail (tea tray type). I didn't know the difference either until I started reading this board. Good luck and take your time to find a good 911, it will be well worth the effort.

It is high, but don't you guys think it matters where in th US he is located? If east coast I would think the car could do 17-18,000. If here in my area (SE) it would do that.

Again.....Thanks for all the advice....The car is MI....I find prices in MI seem a bit higher the other parts of the country. The seller is asking $21k......This is one of the best cars I have seen in my search. It is currently owned by a local PCA member. (If he views these posts, he will know we are talking about his car....that's OK...I need to be an informed buyer). I would have a PPI done if I want to move forward.....He has had the car serviced at one of the best regarded independent Porsche mechanics located in this area. I think this is a very good car.....just trying to determine a fair price and you all have provided me with some great feedback....thanks......

If I had $21K, I would save a little more, wait for my bonus, skip a few dinners, and add $10K more for a RS America. Yes, it is a 964, but they only made a few hundred of these.
Time to skip a few lunches.

Fair? Hmmm check real world prices and then ask what’s fair again. Seems fair and reality prices with some owners don’t chime together. Like the board says seems overpriced, but seems your set on the car, which is what you want. But then again for that price you can find a G-50 car, even a cab in some places. Different tranny, bigger ac vents (like it matters right), and Excellence’s hype to over price the car if you need to sell.
If some of the board members think this Carrera is in the $15k range, what about a SC in the same range?’ 911s (1974-1977) ? Kinda curious to see what the board thinks.
