What's wrong with this picture?

And why would one of the POs do this?

Is it just me or is that hood emblem way too high on the lid??? Not having owned an early car I could be wrong. Just a guess.

It looks like a SC with an early, ill fitting front end sheet metal.

Gawd, I hope that's not a poorly executed backdate! His signature and the interior of that car leads me to think someone tried to update the car..including flares.

Well, we definitely have some sharp eyes here, but you guys missed what I was getting at, unless maybe it's an uncommon-but-not-unheard-of-modification. There's no gas filler flap on the left front quarter! Both front quarters are fibreglass - not sure why this would be, as they're the only fibreglass pieces on the car (until the ducktail goes on this weekend), but even if for some reason they were replaced, why delete the gas filler flap? It's a PITA having to open the front trunk to fill it with gas.

To address the other points - yes, the front crest is too high up - no idea why. Never noticed the rocker panel covers. It's not an SC, the VIN and engine #'s match for 72 911t (though it's titled as a 71 on the MTO registration for some reason). The front sheet metal used to fit fine. The first day I brought it home my wife was putting something in the front trunk. The shocks are long gone, so it's had an attachment fitted which catches to hold the lid open - basically, you just move it to the side to dislodge it and lower the lid. (Sorry if there's a technical term for this piece I don't know of). Anyway, my wife thought the lid was being held open by standard hydraulic shocks, so basically just tried to slam it down closed. You can imagine the horror on my face! I've fixed it most of the way, but it still doesn't sit flat. Another one of my summer projects.

Yes, the flares are added - done by the guy I bought it from, including the cheap paint job. Although it does look like a good job with the flares, so not likely the same shop that did the paint. I'm going to repaint it maybe next summer or the year after, and I'll fix the hood badge at that time.

Basically, I picked it up for a pretty good price, knowing it needed some work. I'm slowly piecing away it all the little things, bringing it back to more original, as time, money and knowledge dictate. There have clearly been a few "unholy" things done to this car (it had a whale tail on it when I bought it!) but there's a beautiful classic in there somewhere!

Chris

Edit: oh yeah, the wheels. They're ugly. Black BBS's. I'm shopping for fuchs.

By the way, I broke almost all of the shopping rules - bought the first one I found, no professional PPI, little or no research on what I should be looking for, etc. Unfortunately I didn't find Pelican until I'd already bought it. Considering all that, I think I actually came out a bit lucky, as there aren't too many major issues with the car, at least nothing that's been ridiculously too expensive to fix.

Live and learn, right? :-)

The original fenders were probably rusted and the PO replaced them with the lowest cost fenders....racing f-glass fenders.

Hey Souk, good thinking - thanks. Other than the body panels, what gas tank filler parts are needed to restore it to original?

What does it look like under the hood? We'll need to know what's missing. How are you filling the tank?

This might be an opportunity to install a through the hood filler just like the race cars. Turn that thing into an RS replica. You have the parts already. It would be impractical to try and fix it to look like an original '72. Remove the rocker covers, fix the hood and fitment of things, add the duck, and you have an RS replica. Order some stickers for the side and BAM! You've made lemonade!

I feel for you, I did the exact same thing more or less.

Here's a couple shots from under the hood:

I have to raise the hood to fill the tank right now, which is difficult, to say the least.

I'm not planning on restoring it to its original look - I like the flares and the ducktail on it, but I'm not sure I want to go with the RS replica look. I'm definitely not a huge fan of the side decals. I'm planning on repainting the car (properly) in the next couple years, so I'd like to fix the hood badge and the quarters at that time. I'm not a huge fan of the colour as it is right now. It was originally tangerine, and I think the PO tried to make it guards red, and it's halfway in between!

That hood emblem does look WAY high on the hood !!!

The cool thing is, you can go 'R' pretty easily now.... Don't even bother putting the filler back in the fender !!! Get a PRO to put cut a hole in the middle of the front lid then either get a flip top or better yet the screw off top w/ drilled fin !!! - VERY cool look and saves you opening and closing the lid !!

Chris, one question kind of as a safety concern, 'do you ever smell gas in the cabin? With the fill spout and tube under the hood like that there may not be adequate 'ventilation'. You may want to seriously think about a center fill cap. I think the car looks pretty good otherwise. Jerome

Jerome,
Thanks for the concern - no, there's no gas smell inside the car, well, at least not since the gas leak was fixed! But that was a fuel pump issue, so no, there haven't been any problems filling it the way it is.

Funny thing about the emblem is I've never noticed it before it was pointed out in this thread. I've looked at thousands of pictures of long-hoods, and it never occurred to me. Now that you guys have pointed it out, it looks really awkward! Why the hell would anyone do that?
