'87 coupe loses power at speed
Driving along at freeway speeds and suddenly the tach goes to 0 RPM and the car, of course, starts to slow down. I let off the gas, then get back on the gas, a half-second later, the tach jumps back to wherever it was and power returns as if nothing occured. A very intermittent problem that just started happening two weeks ago. I can't duplicate it at will so I don't know where to begin troubleshooting. Any advice? The motor has 114K miles and burns about 1 qt/600 miles. Smokes at start-up only. Otherwise a very strong pulling motor and clean car. TIA.

Sounds ominously similar to my probs when I had a broken solder joint inside the DME. Please not this is not the DME relay but the DME unit itself. There are good threads on the board about how to identify it. I was able to resolder mine and my soldering experience consisted of buying the solder iron and fixing the break...probably not the smartest way to go about it but it's worked flawlessly for 3-4 years now.
My car would suddenly without any warning die and restart instantly and I had no clue when it would occur.
