Newbie

Hello all,
Three weeks ago I bought my 1st Porsche--a 1970 911T Targa...she runs well and was garaged kept for most of the past 20 years. I have always loved Porsches and have always wanted to own one, but to be honest, I don't know sh!# about my next step. I'm bringing it in for a tune up next week--anything specific I should have them look at? I'm going to have them drain and replace all fluids, and it needs a new oil filter. I just found this forum three days ago and am so thrilled by the info everyone gives. What you think would be basic info may be new to me. Thanks to all in advance for any advice. Welcome to the Forum.

Yes, you will find a lot of support here. After you get over the initial few minutes, you will find it is easy to do most everything yourself.

You will find the “Search” button almost indispensable because of the huge quantity of information archived here.

The first thing you are going to want to do is drive! Make yourself a list of questions and do some research. When you think you have all the answers, post and ask for more info. You will find that there aren’t many questions about a ’70 911T that haven’t been asked and answered. You have a great resource here to help.

The usual first question is how to check the engine oil level – Hot, idling, and on level ground. Don’t drop the dipstick into the oil tank.

Best,
Grady

welcome aboard! first thing i would recommend if you're not doing the work yourself would be to find the BEST shop in your area. there are a lot of hacks out there. second i would recommend wayne's book for the DIYer.
the search feature on this bbs will turn up a tremendous amount of great info. the people here are great!

Welcome to the Forum! You have come to the right place. The early 911 knowledge and experience on this board is unsurpassed, as you will surely find out.
First of all, make sure you only us the proper oil filters, Mann or Mahle, as far as I know are acceptable brands, Fram and others will fit but should not be used on a dry sump 911.
Second, you need to decide what oil you will use and how often you will have it changed. Do some searches here, and ask questions when you need to.
Third, as that first service is done, inspect everything!! Brakes, brake fluid flush if needed, note pad thicknesses and disc condition, check the 4 CV joints on the rear axles, check all the oil lines for leaks, seepage.
Steering rack, boots, ball joints in front all should be verified in good condition.
The lower "S" hose on these older cars is frequently hardened and seeping oil, it is easy to change during an oil change, a PITA any other time.
So, get real familiar with your 35 year old beauty, and care for it and it will give you a LOT of pleasure...;-)

Get a valve adjustment if you don't have record of when the last one was done.

Thanks to all so far...I took her out today--45 and sunny in Chicago. Cold in the Targa but warm in my heart! Thanks again for the info.

Is this the EBay car that was owned by a guy that was an auto painter? Passed away & car was being sold by his widow/kids, or something like that?? ...;-)

Yep, this is the one. The 2nd owner painted Porsches for 60 yrs...less than 4000 miles since '79. He referred to it as "garage art" to his son-in-law. He kept it in his garage and every now and then took the cover off to look at it. It's in great shape.
Christian.

The car was from Edmonds, WA... she hasn't seen rain in many years and I expect to keep it that way. Not an easy task in Chicago...One minute it's 75 and sunny, and the next there's a tornado warning.
