New ERP bushes and 27mm TBs - WOW!

It's a long weekend over here in Australia and all the bits and pieces for the refurbishment of my rear end were ready to go. Along with a pair of Velo Racing seats (Aussie FIA approved glass buckets), I've had a fun couple of days...

Pulled the old poly bushes I replaced 3 years ago out, they'd worn okay - but the clunks and bangs they made once the grease went was driving me crazy. Chuck Moreland's product is first class - I know everyone says this... but it's true! The polybronze rear bushes went in really easy, perhaps a little too easy, so I had to shim the socket in the torsion tube. Everything else was a breeze. I picked up a pair of nearly new swayaway 27mm bars to replace my original 23mm off the PP Board (Thanks Goggles), and these also went in without a hitch.

Much has been said about the difficulties of indexing larger torsion bars to older cars... suffice to say it's all true! Even now with Wil Ferch's XL calculations and my hiking clinometer all trying to achieve the desired 21 degrees, my ass is still riding high. I think I'm going to have to pull them again and make further adjustments using the rear splines as adjusting just the front splines makes my rear either too tall or too low.

Still, I put it all back together, did an estimate on my wheel alignment, and took the car for a spin. The difference is night and day. No noises, lovely firm ride with much noticeably less body roll. Everything I'd read on the board and everything I'd been wanting from my car

Next the seats went in. I bolted them directly to the rails to get me a little lower in the car. I also fitted in some Willans racing harnesses for DE.... and for the cool factor Absolutely brilliant is the best way to describe them. It feels awesome to sit in the car now and feel just how well they hold you in high speed and tight bends.

Can't wait to get to the track next month!

John

Glad to hear hear you like the results. Did you also change the front tbars to balance the 27s?

Just a note for the benefit of other readers, the bushings are from Elephant Racing and not ERP (a completely different company).

Two notes on the ride height calculator.
1.) Some mention you might want to first put on about 100 miles or so before you re-index...things might settle.
2.) I've received overwhelming feedback that the desired ride height works out OK (within 1/4") as long as all variables ( esp. weight) are plugged-in. Did you by chance estimate ( or measure?) rear weight ??

Chuck, I haven't changed the fronts at this stage as I've got 19mm fronts and a 15mm factory sway bar which (for the time being) seem to match the feel of the rear. I do have access to some 21mm fronts, but I don't think I'll worry about them until I set the rear up with a sway bar (currently no mountings).

Will, that was my thought also, I'll drive it for a week and see just how far out out they are. I currently feel like I'm driving a 50's hotrod

Jake, do a search against Will's name and "ride height"... I think that's what I did. I tried to find it for you, but my browser is playing up.

wow...how cool is that! You guys are pretty darn smart!

Now...who can tell me how much my stock 73 with no AC and 1 Optima battery weighs? Sadly, it's too late to weigh it as the suspension parts are on the bench!
