Well, there's a Porsche stereotype in general "car public" ,that an average Porsche driver is a prick...in a lack of better word. Almost as bad as BMW. LOL
I was wondering do you guys bump into attitudes all over the place? Or is it positive? Driving an aircooled VW gets you positive feelings almost everywhere except for an ocassional inbred(mullet mandatory). So I was wondering how's the experience driving a Porsche. I don't think all those 80s movies helped. 911 seemed to be a mandatory bad guy(in a bad way) car. |

I always thought Corvette owners carried that stigma. Especially those from the '80's sporting mullets.

I try to go out of my way to be nice to other drivers because I've heard the "Porsche owners are jerks" thing more than few times. I do think Porsche owners have a bad reputation, especially where I live. People here tend to look down on anyone driving a "foreeen" vehicle and think you're trying to rub their noses in the fact that they aren't as successful as you. It's ridiculous, but I've experienced it. I think part of it may be jealousy or "sour grapes"...
I actually had an idiot in a Dodge Ram (made by Daimler Chrysler) yell "buy American" when he's driving a car produced by a Greman-owned company. Alot of petty fascists around here...

i think the age/condition of the porsche changes the perception as well, driving a rusty dented 35 year old porsche is much more like the air-cooled vw worled than drving a shiny 996.
Really rust is the great equalizer. I haven't gotten any 'tude from co-workers, but I work with computer geeks, and most computer geeks tend to be car geeks too... Britt |

Hmmm, are you counting the folks that bought 996s and Boxsters for the image value?
I previously owned a 69 911E. When driving around town, owners of 70s and 80s 911s would give me a headlight flash, wave or even a thumbs up. Never once did I get any acknowledgement from the late model 911 or Boxster owners. Some people just don't get it

Geeze. I'm glad to say that I'm not a prick - nor do I look like a prick. As far as attitudes while driving. Well I had one encounter about 6 months ago while getting gas. I was pumping gas accross from this guy who was probably about my age (30) and driving a beat up honda. A white mercedes pulled into the station and as the guy accross from me left he said, "I thought yor car was nice until that one pulled in." I just chuckled and in a metter-of-fact way told him that I have one just like it in my garage - only black. haha. I really don't but I thought it was funny. The guy just took off.
Experiences will vary depending on where you live. Here in the Bay Area everyone - or a lot of peope anyway - drive expensive cars. So it's really not a big deal - it's just another Porsche or BMW or Mercedes. One thing that I did notice is that most people tend to stay away from me on the road, more so than when I drive the Impala. I'm sure they're thinking of insurance premiums.

When I drive my 84 911, I usually receive double takes and smiles - the car is a classic and most people, except for those 20 somethings in their rice burners who want to race me, appreciate a classic car. I also get positive remarks when I drive my 73 Beetle around town. I can be a prick though, but that was a pre-pcar thing. Not a bastard.

I just recently got my Porsche. Does this mean I have to be a prick? I'm actually pretty laid back and nice.

After reading chuckw951's comments, I tend to agree with him. So I will amend my statement and say there are no "average" air cooled drivers. Just this afternoon, I had a guy in a Cayenne, thirty-ish, smoking a big cigar, talking on his cell phone, look over at me in the SC and kind of sneer. Nice guy. Probably never touched a wrench in his life.
